Help me understand...

Please help me understand GPU clock speeds.

For example I am looking for a new Nvidia card.

Now I see an EVGA GTX770 Superclocked 4gb card has a base clock of 1150mhz and an EVGA GTX780 Superclocked 3gb card has a base clock of 967mhz

Does this mean the 770 of the two is faster or is base clock not really relevant in comparing the two.

The 780 has more Cores so faster per clock.

And a 770 is a rehashed 680 so not my choice.

Think if clock speed as revs in a car, the 770 revs higher than the 780 but the 780 is a bigger capacity engine so is more powerful. Similarly, like engines, newer designs tend to be more powerful than older ones, so an 8xx series card will be quicker than a 6xx series card if they share the same number of processors and clock speed.

Its certainly a good card, there are cheaper options......but it will do you well.
