Help me upgrade my Defy from 2.1 to 2.2

Hey all.

I bought a Defy that is unlocked off ebay. I have used an app to ensure that it is not rooted.

The auto update (as in via the phone settings) says device is up to date - Yet I am 100% certain I am running 2.1.

I don't mind updating it manually but there are many different guides online and most seem to want to use this 'oneclickroot' program that doesn't work.

Can anyone help me with the update? I would be happy with just the standard 2.2 software.

The phone is sim-free and the sim is T-Mobile.

Thanks.

Official UK 2.2.2 has been out for over a month (Other 2.2 builds since Jan/Feb :D)

Is that from Motorola?? Or is that a "leaked" one?? I did see it a while back but I was not sure. I more interested in a reliable ROM for my phone and the newer Defy phones have slightly different hardware too which caused some issues with unoffical ROMs. It might not be the case now though.

Do people still bother with network bloated OTA updates?

Because I want to keep the phone in warranty as it is quite new. It is not OTA too. It is easy enough to get rid of the stuff you don't want anyway.

Once it is out of warranty I will upgrade to the latest version of Android.

Most were official builds for different markets (nordic etc), the leaked ones like gingerbread are a grey area though.

Thanks!! If that is the case I will keep a watch out on xda-developers. I am not sure whether Motorola will release an offcial 2.3 ROM for the Defy but anyway I will probably put on one of the un-official ones once the phone is out of warranty.

Thanks sarge78, I have 2.2 running now.
Still can't get the thing to root but I am just glad 2.1 works now.

The 2.2 doesn't seem to be any quicker than 2.1? I though that the main highlight of 2.2 is how much faster than 2.1 is.

Superoneclick will work, just follow the instructions. Peeps posting here should defiantly overclock/undervolt for a super smooth experience with better battery life :) (+ remove some of that bloat)

They're doing a low key 'Defy 2' release soon and it's almost identical to the OG, hence the gingerbread leaks running at 1GHz ;)

Official 2.3.4 should start rolling out a few months after that gets released?

It depends on the model of the Defy though. I have one of the later models which probably will have the same hardware(especially the camera module) as the Defy Plus/Defy 2. There is some noise about earlier ones not being supported.

Anyway, the Defy has an underclocked OMAP3630 which runs at 1GHZ found in the Droid 2 and even the same screen.

Funnily enough the Motorola flash was not destructive despite them saying it would be.

Anyway using a different launcher tends to help speed things up especially when compared to using Motoblur.

After trying a few launchers using Home Switcher Froyo,it seems Go Launcher EX is quite speedy.

I have got the Cyanogen Mod 7 of 2.3 running on it now.

I formatted 2.2 as part of the installation process and 2.2.3 was about the same speed as 2.1 in my experience. The 2.3.4 is quicker, but I will put this down to the custom rom eliminating the T-Mobile crud.

Thanks again for the help earlier guys.

You download Motorola Software Update from the Motorola website and run it on your computer before connecting your Motorola Defy. The System Update option on the mobile does not work.

Not only did you ignore the fact that the thread was started over 2 months ago, but you also didn't actually read the thread to see that the OP has solved his problem now.

In case anybody else is planning to upgrade their Defy to 2.2, I noticed that it was very slow after performing the update until I did a factory reset. After the reset had been done the phone performed much faster than it did even when new.
