Hiya guys,

I bought this PC from Overclockers about 7 years ago. It's a little slow when browsing Windows and the net but generally alright. In particular, I only really play CS:GO which it holds up OK in.

I'm looking to make some upgrades. I haven't really got a budget just looking to make a few cheapish upgrades that'll make a bit of a difference. Would LOVE some advice!!!

Your current pc is too old to justify spending money on. As far as I can gather your 4870x2 is roughly around the performance of a AMD 6950 and the 750ti is roughly around that performance so you would see little upgrade in gpu performance. It is difficult to tell though as there are no benchmarks comparing both cards and you have to find the equivalent of the 4870x2 and try to compare that to the 750ti. The 750ti consumes massively less power and is much cooler running than your current card though. The i3 6100 will be a huge improvement over your E8600.

Would you be confident in buying the seperate components and building it yourself?

Stick windows and your most often used games on the SSD and use your current hdd for programs you don't use that much along with photo's etc.

I included a Z170 motherboard as you can drop in a 6600k/6700k at a later date and be able to overclock. If you wnat to save a bit more money you could drop to a H110 board and save £40 although you wouldn't be able to overclock if you dropped a K series cpu in it in the future.
 
if you want to hold a few more months so next gen cpu and gpus come out.. You can buy an SSD wich make it really fast on dekstop .. plus you can use the ssd in your next build.

I love the core 2 duo thier really good
 
You don't half post some nonsense. As I said before, SSD's are not miracle workers. They will speed up load times but do not increase fps. There are no new mainstream cpu's coming out anytime soon. Broadwell-E is high end and way out of budget and nobody knows when AMD is launching it's Zen cpu's or if it is in fact any good or how much it will be. Core2duo is hopelessly outdated now and even a low end modern cpu will give it a hiding. There are new gpu's coming out soon but are liklely to be expensive plus we don't know what models are arriving first.

I think Stealthploit was refering to this part of the OP. I added an SSD to my almost identical rig about 3-4 years ago and was blown away by how well the PC performed in desktop application use.

@ OP. Deffo keep the P182 ;D I have been rocking mine for about 8 years!
 
As a stop gap i would suggest either 4GB more RAM (assuming you have a 64bit operating system) or an SSD.

The SSD will certainly give a noticeable performance improvement, but would require a OS reinstall

If you save up as pasty muncher suggests you could upgrade the innards for £500-600.
 
Some absolutely quality advice here gents. My initial thoughts were 4gb more ram and an SSD too. I know that wouldn't improve FPS directly but I wonder if the extra stability will give it a tiny boost.

I also LOVE the 500£ specs. I am just wondering if I should drop 5 ton on a machine that'll only ever play CS:GO...

I'm in a pickle.

Would that £500 spec that you guys specced up give me a significant boost over my aging machine?
 
Oh and sadly my case is totally thrashed. After dragging it along to so many lan events as a kid and back and forth from uni, it's literally falling apart !!! lol

Don't go wasting any money on your current pc, it's just not worth it. The parts I suggested will be a huge boost over your current pc plus give the the chance to upgrade in the future. Cases are more a personal choice so I will leave that to you. If you go for the parts I suggested make sure the case will take a cooler that's 157mm tall (it should tell you in the case description) or choose a shorter cooler.

There's a comparison here between your E8600 and a overclocked i3 6100TE which is I believe is one of the lower power versions. They have clocked it to 3.645Ghz which is still slightly slower than the 3.7Ghz that the full fat i3 6100 that I suggested does. Just look at the performance increase!!
