It's come to my turn to cook for our amateur come dine with me, and my other half and mates have really stepped up so the bar is high. I need ideas, but we all agreed that it has to be budget, but not pasta bake cheap. Any ideas? I can't let my missus beat me.

What's the budget? Could do a budget Wellington...
Chocolate torte is always a winner. For starter I'd do something like a trio of filo pastry parcels. Perhaps a spinach, a fish and a meat based one.

Stuffed mushrooms are also a great and relatively cheap starter - herbed breadcrumbs, maybe some diced bacon and you're away.

Sorry, should've said its one course with just nibbled/drinks to start. Budget is below 35 quid, so far its been salmon and creamy mash (was better than it sounds) and Mediterranean shredded pork and peppers with fruit.

So not too formal, but shepherds pie wouldn't cut it. Quality is where its at, and originality seems to have impressed the most. I have this craving for ham leeks and calliflower cheese with cayenne with some sorto of white sauce. Thoughts?

Whats everyone else done? Is it all formal.

If it's not that formal you just have a relaxed evening and do 3 or so different curries with naan, mango chutney etc... on the side.

Use different meats/fish for each one and go for the more unusal ones. Not the ones you have every week.

This sounds nice:

I've been told I can't make Thai green curry as its my signature dish lol. That and sausage and mash :(
