It has a 6 pin power connector on it, but a friend of mine tells me it isn't needed.

Its been a while since I've had a PC (Mac now :/), is this the case? I have a 400W PSU but it is a super cheap job. I guess I can get a power adaptor for this 6 pin connector, but don't want to head out for one if I don't need it.

Most likely you will need it for smooth operation, also cheapy 400watt might be borderline for the job.

On a side note IIRC using rivatuner many of those 6800GS could be unlocked to the full GT.

EDIT: Tho if it has a 6 pin connector I'm assuming thats a PCI-e card which I think had the extra pipelines laser cut instead of software masked like the AGP ones - but if its one of those with 512MB DDR3 then they often had UE binned cores which clocked like crazy - probably due to having some of the functionality disabled for the GS model.

I have a E6300, 2GB Ram and one Sata HD.

I doubt the PSU is really 400W, it came with a £25 case about three years ago - I've got the machine running, I guess I'll just wait and see.

If its a generic PSU that came with the case I'd be surprised if it wasn't borderline at best for powering a 6800 card. If its a brand name PSU then it should be fine.
