Help me with a car computer spec - need DVD & divx playback

Hi - I want to build a low power consumption system to use in my car to play mp3's, DVD's and divx's as well as possibly to run some ODB2 diagnostic sofware. Ideally I would like to be able to disconnect the system from my car and connect it to a tv (on the odd occasion only - it will spend the vast majority of its life in the car).

Minimizing cost is a major priority here by the way. The box does not need to look pretty - it will be in hidden in the boot. I would also like to get away with the minimum spec possible. I guess playing divx and dvd's will be the most intensive thing this box will do. HD playback capability would be a bonus - however I'll pass on it if it will cost a LOT more money to be able to do it.

Having a DVD drive in the system would be a very nice thing for me so that I can play dvd's when I want to. Most content will be played from hard drive.

What spec would you recommend? I was thinking of getting something in the mini-itx form factor so it can easily fit in the boot of my car. I have no clue on what spec to go for though.

The car will expect audio and video to be presented as RCA connectors (composite video I guess)...

Look forward to seeing your replies -

Dub.

These went very recently, and probably would have fit the bill perfectly. Might be worth posting a wanted ad for similar hardware, most of it is pretty cheap stuff now, and should do what you describe fine, perhaps with the addition of an external drive placed inside the car for easy changing of media? Otherwise just rip to HDD.

Only thing I wouldn't be sure about is the GFX capabilities on there. Maybe send the chap a mail if you need more information.
