Hello,

I want too upgrade my current rig so it's able too play all the latest games maxed out at 1600x1200.

I want too spend as little as possible as I will be getting a new PC around September time.

As it stands now:

AMD 3000+ @ 2.1
2GB Geil RAM
A8N Sli Delux
XFX 7800GT
Audigy 2 zs
Tagan 480w

Thanks.

Don't be silly.

A power supply will provide nothing over what he has already.

At no point did I suggest a new PSU without also considering the 8800 to run from it. Please read before replying.

How much are you actually looking to spend? As little as possible ranges from about £50 - £400 depending on who you are with your money.

I don't know to be honest. About £300 - £400. I only want to spend what is needed really.

Why not get one of those 4600x2's on ocuk atm, that should boost your performance nicely.

They do look good and cheap.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ (Socket 939) - OEM £105.74

and maybe

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £291.39

Will I be able too power that or not?

Or I've just seen this BFG GeForce 7950 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £176.24

If you're gaming you WILL want the DX10 cards sooner or later, so it might as well be sooner. You'll be cutting it fine with your current PSU though, hence my first post in this thread. :)

Why sooner ?
Where is this wave of DX10 games ?
Assuming he gets Vista.

Then there is the fact he is getting a new pc around September surely it is better to get the ATI X1950XT or NVidia 7950 graphics card now and the 8800 when it will be cheaper.

Get an X2 processor and either of those graphics cards. I would go for the 4800 as i don't overclock. But thats me.

HIS ATI Radeon X1950 XT ICEQ 3 TURBO SILENT Heatpipe 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £199.74 inc VAT
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ (Socket 939) - Retail £187.99 inc VAT

Quite a boost over current system.

Why spend close to £200 on a DX9 card which will be rendered moribund when he buys the new computer in a few months?

edit - typos

How will those card be rendered moribund when DX10 comes out. They will merely no longer be top of the line, hardly a reason to bin them. And September is 9 months off.

I'm merely offering my opinion. I think he would have a better system with what i suggested, yes an 8800 would be a massive jump, but with an Athlon 64 3000, even overclocked the cpu will bottleneck it.

Once again, in my first post in this thread, I also suggested picking up the now reduced 2x3800+

Thanks for the help all.

I've decided to go with:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ (Socket 939) - OEM £105.74

BFG GeForce 7950 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £176.24

I don't see much point in going DX10 untill September when I'll get Vista and there will most likely be bettter cards out and DX10 games.
