Help folks.

I really like the idea of playing RTS games. But I really struggle with getting anywhere with them.

Currently I'm doing the campaign.

I'm on Invasion of Normandy where you start with about 5 tanks and have to protect dog squad before taking over the rest of the map.

I can rescue dog squad. And I can take just about half the map before things start going wrong.

After about 30 minutes of play, I end up losing my tanks and then have nothing I can attack with. They just send in more and more tanks and I just have to sit there and watch all my bases get taken over.

How do I make some more of my own tanks, or at least fight back?

Hit them in the rear & repair them if possible with engineers.

Haven't touched that campaign yet, just started the original one again.

Haven't a barny. Will need to get this installed on my machine again and actually play the damn thing. Got the original and Opposing Fronts but only played about 3 missions in each before getting sidetracked with other games.

I think once I rescued dog squad *** Allies base becomes available so I produced engi's so they could repair the tanks an build structures like the tank building factory.

But Be warned about somewhere between half way up the map and three quarters there is a minefield. It took out loads of my tanks on the first go as I just rushed in gung ho style.

One of the tanks has a flail on it use that to take point and to safely destroy the minefield.

It's been a fair while since I last played so it a little hazy. I will have to start playing it again especially online with newcomers to COH as I have never tried online COH.

I did answer this question 5 minutes ago, so Im not giving you another full run-down, but...

I have myself just done this very level yesterday funnily enough.

Good tips?

Ok, your main home base is at the bottom left right, but going towards the bottom/right, a load of people keep coming down there to attack your base, get a couple of bumnkers setup there. No matter how much of the area you own, they still come from nowhere, which is irritating.

get a number of bunkers sorted out if you can... They are a lot more useful than you think, and of course their position is important too.

where your rescued dog company from, turn that into a base, and have a couple of mortar and heavy gun squads in there, the flailing tank as suggested is a good idea, and just at this point, is a church so get that owned.

End of the day, you only really need to get along one of the road, not all of them, so even clearing up both the roads after the fork, is a waste of time as no matter how well you clear everythign out, the buggers still come.

Up to the north just past the palce you rescure dog company is a fairly large enemy base however, so send in some heavy artilliery to there and this will pretty much secure your chances of winning because they will not be able to built tanks ( How true this is I am not sure cos its about the time that I waste that lot that I manage to get some more of my squad to clear the road and get the goods through.

I will go back to that level and have another go to see if I can get somehtign a bit more solid to help me out, and therefore help you out, but the thing is, that a lot of this game is simply pure luck I find.

Nice post Rakoon - my strategy is thus:

Keep 2 shermans, 1 cav and halftrack back by your base, and use the rest to rescue dog co and then fall back to your base, keeping tanks alive and getting engineers produced first to start work on your base.

Initially your base will be attacked from the front and side, so having mobile units to handle threats while your population count is still low is vital, as buildings are up and you have more fuel, AT guns and fixed defences can replace the Shermans, allowing your now veteran tanks to go wandering.

Build up your base, take the nearby ammo + fuel dumps, and push out slowly along bottom right of map, then when you can replace tanks for base defence with AT guns and MG bunkers. Also sprinkle a few tank traps around, to funnel tanks towards AT killing zones, or block off vulnerable areas.

Use inf mostly to clear bottom right of map, as theres a few AT guns, then clear the buildings and take over the map gradually, working up towards the Pz Lehr divisions' base, then attack with a big force - inf to grenade the AT guns, shermans to take out the enemy tanks and buildings, flame engineers for speedy building smashing and later tank repairs.

Once thats done, its a numbers game... they can only produce infantry, so keep shermans up front, inf and halftrack .50cal supporting and engineers for repairs, flail the minefields then head on and mop up "Shoot anyone who's too dumb to move!"

I tend to secure both roads, inf still does arrive from the top of the map, but 2 shermans with 3 veterancy, and .50 cal MG's deals with them pretty quick, allowing for the convoy to get through.

One last note - keep an eye out for the 10 PzKpfw IV G (ok ok, I know my armour.....) that roll onto the map through the field. Target them whenever you find them, and DONT let them pull back, or you'll find they get repaired and you only have to fight them all over again. Sacrifice infantry to get sticky bombs on them if you have to...

Oh, and have fun!! :D

Hill 192 was a bloody annoying mission, kept getting artillery fire even after destroying there spotting building, guessing there was another the other side of the map?

Ran 4 squads of airbourne up the middle to distract the tanks and fire, 3 squads of rangers and 2 shermans rushed the point for the west and fired on the rear armour of the panzers while capturing, worked a treat.

Did you look around the rear areas of the hill? The Germans have an Sdkfz 251/2 halftrack or 2, the variant with the 6 large mortar shells on the side..... which generally batter you as you head up the hill. Take a croc and some infantry to wipe them out, much easier.:p

Agreed though, that mission is superbly annoying, but VERY satisfying smashing the hill to bits with artillery as you finally take it over! Never won the medal on anything other than easy difficulty tho. :(

I rescued dog squad, then brought them all back to my HQ immediately including the tanks and bunkered whilst I got the base built up. Dealing with infantry isn't a problem, it's the waves of tanks they send your way. After a while also you get the Panzer division coming for you, so make sure you have some AT crews pointing in the direction they are coming from.

Be careful of tanks sneaking in around the bottom of your base also, and always keep some form of anti-infantry unit in the area as the computer just loves sending flamer engineers into your base when you aren't looking.

HA, bloody game, and bloody Vista!

I went back to the level, purely in order to try out some tests and get some solid info to come back to post here, but me being me just got engrossed in the bloody game and I lost it altogether... Hill192, argh, yeah, the demon level and I agree, its so bloody frustrating and when you finish it ( and win ) you get a warm all over smugness unlike any other.

I started getting issues with Vista and these issues never affected COH until a few days ago, and last night it got so bad that I decided to start all over... I was going to go with a fresh Vista64 with SP1 intergrated but as Vistas usual shittyness, it saw my first HD as F: and not C: ( I had to disconnect the drives last time but I decided that Vista isnt good enough for me to bother and so I have chucked XP64 back on and I am glad I did... Im now running full speed and like a dream )

So, I will COH a bit more later on and get really really cocky and play it on hard ( Lets see if I can actually land my squad on that beach at long last ) LOL

I get zero problems on Vista64bit

Last time I tried Vista64 I ran this game just perfect...

This time however, as I said earlier on, I was playing the game perfeclty fine, but then Dawn OF War started hanging, Need For speed also started to hang, Winter assault would hang even before I got the sentinels on *** first level, then it got worse and worse and yet I was able to play all the way just past the level the OP is on about and it was peachy! - In fact, with DX10, I was loving this game because its visually much better than DX9.

Im reinstalling it and COH-OF and the DoW games right now...

Cheers for the advice guys.
Still not managed it though. LOL!

Ok, lets try another approach... You must always remember that this game is full of luck... Good or bad, its just luck that gets you through.

First off, rescue the others and as soon as possible, get that into a base. Fortify it as much as you can, and use riflemen as they have sticky bombs... These can be every bit as good as a tank, and in fact, to be honest a couple of riflemen squads are often better than a tank cos a couple of sticky bombs will make short work of any tanks, so get that lot loaded up, get a base there and a couple of MGs to take care of the infantry coming along.

what I want you to do, is get a couple of MG nests along the bottom/right, facing to the right.
Also along here is a couple of german squads with the heavy cannons, take these over, and this will help you a fair bit.

I have seen people play this game and need to rebuild their squads but they are nowhere near a home base... Well, the HalfTracks will also replenish the squads, so as long as a HalfTrack is near, you can resupply the men.

Now, once you have the bottom and over to the right all covered, you have a much stronger chance of being lucky. ( hehe )

up to the left now, is another big gun. Get it... You should have had it much earlier on actually but Im not thinking like I do in the game... It would be a useful addition for where you rescued the others from... This is also where the German tanks will be coming at you so an Anti Tank gun will be a nice tool to help the riflemen with their stickies.

obtaining the church ASAP ( Near the mines in the road ) is a great idea, as is having a sniper / MG in one or two buildings near the fork in the road.

Sometimes, what can be a good idea, can fall foul, but, as you move up the screen, there are certain places where the germans come out, and having a bunker ready to stop them can work wonders...

Dont spread yourself too thinkly at first... It might sound like a great idea and you might think that you are about to win this one, and then all of a sudden, you lose some territory to them, then more and the next thing you know, your base is down etc etc etc sneaky sods that they are, so take your time, as you read earlier on, 50-59 minutes... Hell I think the first time I actually completed this one I must have been close to 2 hours Im sure and even though I think I know what to do, I stil get to see my arseand at any time I can lose the game.

Oh, up along from the far-right, going up to the top is full of german nasties ok, there is the first where you should have put a couple of MG bunkers, a bit firther up another bunker or two, perhaps an half track with a 4-barrel for some mobility and then going further up is the main german base and tank facilities... When you come to this, rush it cos one or two squads will just get wiped.

Anyway, Im going to reinstall it now and play for a bit...
