Help me with my first overclock

Hey guys,

ive got a Q6600 running at Stock 2.40ghz with my 4gb RAM running at 4-4-4-12.

I wanna know how to get my Processor up to 3.0ghz as im a complete noob i dont know how to do this.

i have a Gigabyte GA-DS3L motherboard. and i know where to change the voltages n all that i just need to know what exactly needs to be altered.

It should be really simple with that board.

Firstly set the System Memory Multiplier to x2.4 if you're running PC2-6400, or x2.0 if you're running PC2-5300.

Then up the FSB to 334mhz.

You shouldn't need to touch any voltages providing you've already set your correct memory voltage.

I've set my current memory voltage to +0.4
my System Memory Multiplier is at AUTO which says the ram is running at 800mhz.

il give the above a go and let you know.
how will i know if its worked?

i oced mine to 3.2 by simply changing the fsb to 1600 and the multiplier to 8 i left the voltage at auto and whent from there

The POST screen should show 3ghz and the memory running at 800mhz

Ok ive got it up to 3ghz easily. with temps at around late 40's. is that ok?

how far could i get it up without heating it up too much?

Idle temps? If so then you'll not want to go much higher.

yea they are idle temps. are they strangely high?

well actually im playing cod4 and those are the temps wen i go back to the desktop with the game still running.

Exit COD4 and let the temps settle for a couple of mins and then see what they are.

Are you using the stock cooler? And can you download and open the latest version of CPU-Z and tell me what it says the Core Voltage is.

Ok ive left my comp for about 15mins, and the temps have dropped to around mid to late 30's.

is that ok?

Core Voltage on CPU-Z is 1.120v

1.120v in Windows means you've probably got a low VID (stock voltage).

What software are you using to read the temps? Use the latest Core Temp if at all possible. It will also tell you the chips VID.

The CPU-Z reading seems very low then. I'd expect maybe upto 0.07v of a difference between the VID and the reading in CPU-Z, but not that much. But it shouldn't matter.

Run OCCT for 10 minutes and see how hot the CPU gets. That'll give you a great idea of how much further you can push it.

ok im running OCCT but something looks wrong.

its says Overclock 1998.06 mhz. CPU clock (1998.1mhz)

is that right?

OCCT can't read some boards correctly, but CPU-Z always does.

its weird. now occt is saying 2999mhz it seems to vary, same thing happens on CPU-Z

That'll be Speedstep dropping the multiplier to x6 at idle.

It should stay at 3ghz when OCCT kicks in after the first minute of monitoring ends and the test starts.

ok then.

whilst using OCCT, it got to about 99% of testing the CPU. i then got the blue screen saying abotu fault found in non paged area
