Ok, I now have my netwrok connection working and both Internet xplorer and Firefox can use the web download etc. perfectly.

However, when I open up programs such as Steam or try to validate the copy of windows, they both complain that they cannot find a connection to the Internet. Currently the computer is connected to a router to get access.

Any ideas suggestions about what is happening?

Sounds like firewall blocking ports to me. What firewall software are you running or are you just using the router f.w?

There isn't any firewall or anti-virus running on it yet. So just the router and its NAT is the only thing protecting it at the moment

Still relativly clean minus a few programs such as Steam and Firefox being the only twi items being installed apart from windows. Still ahvn't decided upon an anti-virus or firewall to download yet.

go to your routers setting and make sure upnp is enabled, you should be able to see somewhere on your routers page.

Oh noes, my friend can get access to the router and he's misplaced the instructions to access it. :p

Its a belkein if anyone knows how to fiddle with the options for these.
