My Asus Maximus Formula has been behaving strangely the last few months. The PC would sound like it was powering down and lock up, sometimes it would unfreeze. I believe it was to do with the HDD drive powering down but am unsure what is causing it. (Even bought a new HDD and then realised that wasn't the problem!).

I've was able to fix the problem for a short while by swapping all my sata cables around but now the problem is back and it's far worse. I recently changed processor and rebuilt my PC (adding new fans etc). The HDD problem has come back and so I tried re-installing windows. It now won't let me load windows back onto my PC and gives me an error after the 1st reboot stage. The noise of the drive powering down happens every few minutes during install.

If anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies guys :). I tried with one stick of ram but same problem. Tbh, having had this board for the last 18 months, I'm well schooled in it's issues with memory!

I've tried with 2 different HDD's so it shouldn't be that. Definitely seems to be some sort of Sata problem but I suppose there's a (small) risk that it'll work when it get's back to Asus and they'll send me a bill and post back.

I'm thinking of giving it one last try with my old processor before I start the RMA process. Doubt it'll work but I want to be sure before sending the board off and potentially having to wait for ages for repair/replacement. :/

Thanks again. ;)

I don't think I'd need to update the BIOS as I am on version 0802 and this supports my processor. Having tried different connectors on my power supply, I believe the problem may be PSU related. I've ordered a new PSU (the old one was "buzzy" anyway) and if this doesn't work, I'll RMA the Mobo.

Thx again peeps. ;)

Bump! Just reporting back to say I've fixed the problem.

I sent a webnote to OCers support and they suggested I try another power supply. This proved to be the problem so having bought myself a lovely new PSU, my PC is fixed. Just in time for Xmas, woo hoo! :D
