Following my other thread regarding artifacts with my Gigabyte 580 (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18303102) it seems I am once again cursed with never ending GPU issues (or it could be something else).

So after getting my second Gigabyte card replaced and testing it there were still artifacts in Crysis and this was a brand new replacement manufactured in July. I thought this can't be right so thought about trying another brand.

Fast forward to yesterday. I bought a shiny new Asus 580 DCII and thought this should solve all my problems but I was wrong. I got home installed the card and did some tests. Crysis produced the same artifacts just like from my previous thread however it was worse with this card as I couldn't run it fro more than 30 seconds without it crashing. Crysis always crashes within a few seconds after displaying loads of artifacts over the screen. I then have to end it via task manager.

What I have done so far:

I have tried older drivers and the latest- Did not help
I have tried increasing the voltage on the card and lowering the clocks- Did not help
I have tried the card in my old 775 system and I got the exact same problem- Crysis crashes within a few seconds.

I did try something else today which is seriously confusing me. I tried the card in the second PCI-E slot and ran Crysis. Crysis didn't produce any artifacts and I could run it without it crashing. I thought cool, problem was a faulty PCI-E slot. I then ran Heaven which did what Crysis did when it was in the primary PCI-E slot. It froze within a few seconds, displayed artifacts and this time I had to do a hard reset as I couldn't get task manager up. I also got the message D3D11AppWindow::do_swap():device removed. Metro 2033 also crashes within a few minutes.

Not sure what else to do now. Are all 3 580's I've gone through faulty? Is something else faulty? My other system produced the same problems with all 3 580's I've tested over the last few months.

What else can I try as I'm running out of ideas?

My specs:

I5 2500K @ 4.5GHz
P8Z68-V Pro
8GB G.Skill Ripjaws
Corsair HX 750
Asus 580 GTX DCII

Also I tested my 7950GT in the system above and it runs just fine. I know it's ancient but it's the only other card I have. Probably not a sufficient test at all as it won't run Crysis/Heaven/Metro. Lol.

Any help would be great as I'm totally lost, there is no way I can be this unlucky!

I assume your doing all these tests stock and not with a 4.5 overclock ?

all 3 cards do the same in a completely differant machine ?

I've tried it running the CPU at stock but it didn't make a difference. As for the OS it was a fresh install when I tried the first 580 a few weeks ago so I've not done another install.

The cards did the same thing in my other system although it has a 4 year old Coolermaster 650w PSU. I would think it would be sufficient as I only connected what was required so it should have been enough.

When I had the Gigabyte 580 things didn't seem to crash (only Crysis did after about an hour) and Metro ran ok although I didn't play it for that long.

Yeah. I've increased the voltage to 1075mV. For 782MHz core that is more than enough. Still didn't make a difference...:(

Edit: Forgot to add, OCCT doesn't produce any errors.

The only other PSU I have is from my old system, which I've tried it in. I think I'll have to pop into PC world (OMG!), get another PSU, test it with that and return it when I'm done.

I think I'll pick up the same one as mine (HX 750) and see if it is a faulty PSU. Do you think the mobo is faulty? Like I said all of the 580's I've tested could run OCCT for an hour+ without any errors.

A little update. I have tried my Gigabyte card in the second PCI-E slot and I don't get the aritifacts in Crysis and Heaven does not crash either. The Asus one crashes in Heaven/Crysis/Metro etc in the second slot but has no artifacts. Both the Gigabyte and Asus cards have problems in the first slot.

Basically:

Primary PCI-E slot (blue):
  • Gigabyte card- Artifacts in Crysis
  • Asus Card- Artifacts and Crashes

Second PCI-E slot (white):
  • Gigabyte card- No artifacts. Card runs fine
  • Asus card- No artifacts but always crashes in games/Heaven

Not sure now. Faulty PCI-E slot or not? Something is off somewhere as one slot is fine with one card but the other card has issues with either.

Any ideas?

How is your CPU overclocked?

Is the Base Clock still at 100MHz?

The PCI-E bus is linked to the Base Clock.

If the Base Clock has been increased it may have affected the operation of the PCI-E slots.

Well I've tried updating the BIOS as advised by Asus and I have also tried with another brand new HX750 PSU in both my new system and old system and I am still getting the same issue. I'm now out of ideas. Perhaps I am just so unlucky that this 580 is actually faulty? The thing is OCCT and Furmark will run without any issues.
