Help, Motherboard Damaged

Same here ste-sim2x9, I am just trying to help out my friend to try & save him some money if possible.

ste-sim2x9, do you know if there would possibly be any risk of damaging his asus X51L cpu if I do by one of these X58L mobo’s & it still fails to turn on.

I believe that it is only the mobo that has failed in my friend’s laptop by the looks of the damage that I showed in the photo above.

Just thinking of doing this because it would work out slightly cheaper, than him taking it for a mobo repair at the local pc repair shop.

I don't think so as the cpu is socket P and both motherboards are socket P.

Does anyone know if I would need to buy a new power supply for an Asus X58L laptop, if I do change the X51L motherboard over to an X58l one?

The voltages are the same it would appear so surely it would be ok to use the current X51L power supply that came with the laptop.

Would I be right in thinking that the current HDD & battery would still be compatible with an X58L mobo, but would the hdd possibly require formatting on start up or will Vista be detected & the machine start as it should.

Thanks again to ste-sim2x9 for all your help.

You may need to reformat your hard drive but you might get away with it if its the same board. The only thing you need to do is make sure the X58L is identical to the X51L as the ports like usb and lan line up. Maybe good see if you can get the seller to email you some pictures of the board from front, sides and bottom to make sure.

I have found an Asus X51L used on the net from a seller in china, but they want £170 which is way over priced for a used board I think.

Looking like my best bet is to try an X58L mobo & hope that it works.

Here is a photo of an asus X58L mobo, it looks very similar to me but I have noticed that there is a slight difference to the 'right' of the purple square 'cpu' on the right of the board but I hope it should not be much of a problem.

X58L mobo 'sorry for small photo':

& here is an X51L:

Would probably be fine I think, I've done the same with a HP NX6110 using a NC6120 motherboard before now. If it doesn't fit you can always just sell it on ;) Or pull the fried looking parts and replace them with the ones off the other board.

I think I may have one of these boards from a faulty machine indoors. Had a broken dc socket but the machine is identical to the second machine pictured. Will get more info when I get indoors.

Was thinking of getting a PC MOTHERBOARD ANALYZER of the bay, to check that the CPU is ok before doing anything.

Has anyone used one of these analyzer things & can you recommend me one or do they not work that well.

The board I have is out of an asus pro 31p, looks like an intel chipset and is doing nothing. whats the rating on that chip? i could de solder one from this board and send it over for you?

I have suggested to the owner that I could use an X58L mobo to try & get the laptop working again, so will need to wait & see what he wants to do with it.

Prices on the bay are dear I think for a ‘used’ (X58L) mobo at around £100, I have seen four around this price that are accepting offers. I don’t think any sellers would sell for around £50.

I have been quoted £70/£90 to repair his X51L mobo by a local shop, & I am looking to try & beat that price with a used X58L mobo but have not found a working one lower than the repair cost.

It’s looking like he will not bother doing anything with it, as he is not that keen to spend any money on it.

I think if a mobo comes up on the bay that is cheap & works then i will suggest it to the laptop owner.

The owner thinks it is probably not worth him spending the money on taking it to a repair shop, & I agree with him .

I think me repairing it by soldering it would take a lot of time & effort that I don’t have, & I would not be paid for any of this anyway. Also the fact there could be more problems with the board that I don’t know about puts me of going down this route.
