Built a PC from 2nd hand parts, built many over the years and having the following issues

Originally the board would fire up and refuse to cycle, by moving the graphic card it would boot and all was hunky dory, then randomly same symptoms, move the card back to original slot and all is hunky dory.

This has worked for a few days but now its decided to randomly power off full stop, my thoughts are PSU or Motherboard fault or both, any idea's on how to narrow this down?

by completely taking apart my one (The dodgy one is my sons), then again having random cut outs with my own as well, both recently went to windows 10, wonder if that is another factor

Intresting , go back to previous operating system and see what happens.

nightmare :( , from experience it strikes me as hardware fault on sons kit, no idea how to isolate what it is though

its a g87 zoc with a 7950 in it, tried two diff 7950 same result.
Guess I can look at bios, will require complete reinstall from 8.1 though due to MS insane policy with bios update on windows 10

Try using a live Linux distribution for a while to see if the problem persists. If it does, then that implies hardware issue of some sort, if not then a Windows problem.

suprised the forum geniuses havent flooded me with suggestions

Power issues perhaps? It would be helpful if you provide the full spec of the system. Also, try reseating things and checking everything is in properly, as its odd it would wokr a bit, and now not.

Presumably you know what was working before the rebuild so that would help pinpoint it too.

it was all more or less new (2nd hard stuff) apart from the PSU

Bigger issue is its so sporadic, works one min, not the next, redone thermal paste, rebuilt outside the case, tried with diff psu and original one and seems stable for now, makes me recall fondly why i moved to consoles only a few years ago
