Before you say anything, yep this is a charity thread. If that's not your bag or you have no interest in the charity involved then I request only that you click your back button. :)

My mate Mark sent out an email a couple of weeks ago to a long list of people, with the following:

I have decided to join a team at work taking part in the 15 Peaks Challenge in order to raise money for a local charity.

The challenge is to climb all 15 peaks in Snowdonia, North Wales, above 3000ft...in less than 24 hours. The event takes place on the 17th June.

It's a 30 mile walk (longer than a marathon) and a total ascent of around 4000 metres, which is equivalent to climbing half-way up Mount Everest!!!

The charity is based in Surrey (locally to me) and is called Eikon. Eikon works alongside young people and families living in difficult or unhappy circumstances. The charity does lots of good work with disadvantaged children in the local communities.

So, I'm asking for your money! It's as simple as that. Our team needs your sponsorship. We're hoping to raise loads of money which will make a real difference to a small charity like this. If that's not enough to sway you then please do it just to support me! This is the biggest physical challenge I have ever taken on, and for those of you who are aware that my usual idea of vigorous exercise is a weekly trip to the climbing wall or a stroll around the local park I'm sure you'll realise what a mammoth undertaking this is going to be for me, I've got 12 weeks to get myself fit. I'm even going to join the gym!

Please sponsor me if you can. It would be amazing to reach our target donation. Giving money is really easy, you can do it securely online with a credit or debit card. Just click on the link below to go to our team website.

If you are a UK taxpayer, Justgiving will add an automatic 28% bonus to your donation at no cost to you.

I logged in to donate a few minutes ago and was disappointed at the number of people that had stepped up so far. As such, I thought I'd have a go at pimping the cause here to you fine people!

I have no expectations from doing this, no one is obligated, I'm not going to ram it down your throats, there's not even a minimum donation. All I'm asking is that if you have a few quid spare to send it his way. This isn't something they're taking on lightly, in fact it's an exhausting and incredibly difficult challenge. My mate is the ex-president of the Nottingham University climbing club so he knows exactly the kind of terrain, conditions and exertion to expect.

I haven't told him I'm throwing this open to anyone so hopefully any extra donations they receive will be a pleasant surprise. If you can spare a moment and a few coppers then please throw something in. If not, thanks for reading anyway!

I will donate, I would also love to do this myself, what are the chances of people tagging along?

edit: with the benefit of extra sponsorship :)
