Following on from this thread: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/assembling-my-new-mobo-and-cpu.18886181/ - which shows what I am upgrading from and to.

My new mother board arrived + CPU + fan + RAM. I believe my old and new motherboards are both VPX, although my old one is just slightly shorter. But I checked to see if theh mobo fits in my case - it does fit nicely (I thought).

So I un-plumbed my old mother board (had to take out the GPU and water cooling fans etc) and got it out. Then started to test-fit my new motherboard. It goes into the case ok, but due to the way the old risers and back-plate (for eth, usb, hdmi, audio etc) line up, the bottom of my new board overlaps the power supply and so I cant get it in and lined up...

Here is a picture of my old/new board next to each other:

Here is a picture of the board inside the case - but not aligned with the screws or back plate:
https://ibb.co/JFxwrnn - you can see it fits in the box, but the PSU is in the way :(, and the mobo needs to go more to the left - you can see the cutout at the back does not align (its a bit dark - its the greyish area just left of the silver eth/usb ports)

Here is my board held in the correct alignment, but the bottom 1-2cm is overlapping the PSU and so I cant drop it into place...

So now I need advice what I should do?

My tower is a nice large tower (not a mini or anything) so it should have just fitted. But then this is the first time I have changed a motherboard...

I think my options are:
- get a different motherboard
- get a different case
- re-work the case I have somehow

But I really hope there is an easier solution :)

I am not sure all it says i corsair on the front :o

It looks like this case: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cors...4CyTn5DPD19n5aUFIxdzjUs_jLLWEqlxoC0C0QAvD_BwE

But it only has 2 blanking plates on the front not three... so it could be this one:

bugger, I think it is that - it says micro ATX ...

It looks like I could take out the PSU (run it outside the box), knock a bit of metal work out of the way and then put the mobo in (as a temp solution)...

yeah I am starting to come to that conclusion!

I take it you dont like my put the PSU on the outside idea?!

What would you suggestion?

- new mobo (and I might be able to send my ATX one back) - but then I guess I am limited always to MATX
- new case (perhaps the first one I linked above?), cost a bit more, but more future proofed I guess?

Again your support is really appreciated minibiker :)

I bought the case in my first link - its like the cheapest full tower case (bar two that are not in stock) - and hopefully makes the change over easier since the layout should be the same (I am thinking)....ehhhh.... means I have to go even more balls deep in my re-build - infact I think this is not a full re-build :o

but I can now upgrade to XL-ATX (apparently!)

I think it is literally just a taller version of what I already have (looks identical - except taller).

So.... after asking in overclockers about upgrading my RAM, this is now the state of my PC:

lol :D

I am quite exited about my new PC! - the only things that I kept from the old PC are the PSU and the SSD/HDD! I am almost tempted to get another PSU (cheapo) and a disk drive and make it into a linux box (or sell it), re-building will be a bit of a pain, that corsair cooler was kind of complicated! (had lots of wires). I think my case arrives over the weekend... I will probably be back with more questions! - thanks very much for all the input :)

@no idea what - what do you mean? I thought they can go in any slot? - but also there was a little tiny label saying "first" - so I started from that side and added sequentially. What would be the correct way (I appear to be totally unaware of this)?

ok I read my manual... damn, that is very weird (to me) - you are totally right (not that I doubted you, sir!).

Manual says to use: X | X | (where X is not used) - I have mine like: | | XX

I will re-configure :) - thanks, that is a really good spot dude

I just re-read that label on the mobo.. it says "first" but then there are little lines drawn pointing to DIMMA2 and DIMMB2, I had not seen that the first time - I was thinking this PC re-building was going to be quite easy - I think I need to be far more careful - do some more manual reading :o

thanks guys
