Hi guys

I need to replace a knackered HDD in a Sony laptop, the model is VGN-FW11E

Speccy says the model is a Samsung HM251JI

Can anyone recommend a replacement between 320GB-500GB, the original is a 250GB.

I don't know if they are all the same, using the same connectors etc., I've never had to change one before.

Which brings me to my next point...how on earth do you get into the things to change it? Has anyone replaced a Sony HDD before?

Thanks!

Any 9.5mm HDD should do fella SATA Notebook 2.5".

1. Do you have the recovery disk?
2. Was it Vista or Win 7 preloaded?
3. If Vista try Windows 8 while it is free or borrow a mates copy and use the key on bottom of laptop.
4. If Win 7 then download this legal iso of windows 7 http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/. Select your flavour 64 or 32 bit.
5. Use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to create a bootable USB stick (8GB to 16GB required).
6. Once installed use key on bottom of laptop.
7. If none of the above is doable then l suggest Ubuntu 12.04/Kubuntu 12.04 or Linuxmint 12 as alternative OS's.

Regards.

Thanks for the link, I'll have a browse! :D

Do you know of any good tutorials for replacing the drives? I'm fine with the Windows installation process, I've just never swapped a drive in a laptop before.

Thanks!

Just wanted to come back and say thanks for your help.

Turns out it was a lot easier than I expected, once I got one of the 2.5" drives I found there was a flap to unscrew on the underside of the laptop...four screws and that was it, job done! :D

Thanks again for the replies. :)
