My sons computer just died on him, it's my old pc I made about 5 years ago so now I imagine it's old hat.

C2d 6750 CPU
4gb ram
P35 mobo
1tb HDD
8800gt gpu
Ocz 600w psu

I am pretty sure the gpu has gone, blocky display all over even in bios, the crash killed windows too but i can sort that. I have been out of the scene for 3 years now since moving to mac so I am at a complete loss what I need to buy, budget is limited too to max out at around £150.

Can anyone recommend me a fix, he uses a 24" 1900x1200 monitor.

Cheers

sounds like gpu yep
maybe clogged up with dust and over heated, them things had tiny little fans

does that mobo have onboard? could maybe switch to that for now to test?

Cleaned it out 6 months ago when the psu blew, decided to give pc a de-dust then. The gpu has had an after market cooler on for about 3 years so I'm sure it's not overheating.

Looking at getting a gtx560ti or maybe the 550 are these compatible to the 8800gt. Also will the new psu cut it?

Okay budget is now less unfortunately

What about GTX550Ti for £89

or

HD7770 for £100

Which would offer my son reliable gaming, the old 8800gt ran them fine so from what i have read both should be a bit of a step up. .....

any of the above are suitable for your sons pc. the rest of the components will bottleneck the gpu anyway so it will only run as fast as the rest of the pc lets it.

People are SERIOUSLY recommending a 7850 with that old system? My E5200 overclocked to 3.75GHz is bottlenecking even a 9800GTX+.

The OP should either just try his luck either by fixing the card by baking it in the oven, or be better off just get a 2nd hand Q6600 (and overclock it) and 6850 ish~ card...it would give FAR better performance than pairing a 7850 with the current CPU.
