Long story short. i live in Gibraltar, im been sent to darlington (county durham) to work in the darlington memorial hospital, ill be staying in the hospital accomidation.

Ive made an enquiry about the internet accessability, the IT dept informed me that i had to arrange this is a service provider + its Restricted to DIALUP only, because the "lines" wont support broadband.

Is this possible?

secondly, ill im really intrested in is gaming (wow esp) not expecting pings of 0. but what other options do you think i have? are there any wireless providers? if so anyone got any epxeriance with them? connection reliability? ect?

most hospitals these days use wireless connectivity don't they?

Sounds like a load of bull tbh

The phone lines are probably provided through a PBX, so that why you possibly can't get broadband. If you want higher speed than dial up, you could consider a 3g mobile contract, but the pings will be less than impressive.

Im sure your IT department could help you out, do you think they don't have high speed internet access on their network?

Find an internet cafe? - id much rather have internet access in my room.

What are the 3g contracts like? i dont need a ping of 0, 200-300 would be suitable.

Well I know for a fact Darlington is a cable area so, my friend pretty much lives opposite the hospital and runs Virgin just fine.

Another option is to get a wireless internet dongle, Darlington has a very stong 3G signal.

Do you know the phone number you'll be on and the postcode? If so, try DSLZone to see what broadband providers there are, if any.

The lines will probably be run off a PBX and are hence digital extensions. You can use a converter box to get a modem connection over these (we used to offer that to our patients).

Best bet is to go for a mobile broadband provider. mate of mine used to play Wow on their vodafone service and it was ok. It's no good for downloading/streaming and it's not cheap tho.

As for hospitals and wifi, not many use wifi at all. The complexity of maintaining coverage across all wards is too much, plus some medical devices don't like Wifi. Not to mention those in residential areas (like most in lodon are) don't like providing local residents with free internet :p

I use a 3G dongle for playing WoW at work, i get between 300-400 ping with only 4-5bars of signal.

And it is very playable, dont notice any lag at all. They seem to be very fair on your usage too, i pay for 15gig a month, last month after a format on my laptop, i downloaded all my progs AND WoW. and they only took 1 gig usage of me :) that also includes playing and surfing all week too (I do make sure i check it when i have finished doing what im doing tho lol)
