Help needed asap - knocking noise from mondeo engine - sound clip included. (now mp3)

Hi all

Comming homw last night I hit a large pot hole in the road and ever since there has been a really strange knocking noise coming from the engine of my 2001 Modeo 1.8LX.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this and tell me if I should be driving the car? The noise seems to be comming from the engine block and changes in speed with the engine revs.

Really worried about this as I need the car for work. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

I have to be a t work at 4:15 tomorrow morning and need to know if its ok to drive? I have a motorbike but will wake up the whole bloody estate if i start that thing up.

Can't tell what it is form that soundclip. Have you bent a pulley, dented the sump or anything else visable when you look under the car?

Doesnt seem to be much oil in it at all, no sign of leaks though and no warning light.

going to fly to halfords on the bike and get some, hopefully it helps.

Got some oil, it look nearly 5L :o

Im not sure if the oil warning light should have been on at that? Noise has been reduced a bit but its not totally gone. Taking it to a garage after work tomorrow to get it checked out.

****5**** litres? That's like the entire oil capacity of the engine!!

Holy crap, 5 litres is basically the total capacity of the engine.

You are almost certain to have done massive damage to the big ends and mains never mind anything else. That evil knocking is either the big ends or mains, hard to tell from the clip.

I reckon that engine will be dead in a very short space of time.

If the engine is swallowing that much oil, damn, the engine is about to die a death dude!

When you mentioned the pot-hole I assumed that you meant the noise was being made when you drove the car, not when just running the engine.

From the deep tone of the knocking, it is going to be a bottom end problem. Either crank main bearings or big ends - both of which are normally quite expensive to fix (to the point that it is often cheaper to get a recon engine than fix them). 5 ltrs is a lot of oil, and a lack of oil is a sure fire way to kill most engines.

It's probably not worth driving the car in that state as a) you will only make it worse and b) it will probably let go fairly soon, and when it does your car will be going nowhere.
