Howdy!

Though my current set up has served me wellover the last 8 years, its time for an upgrade & to move with the times! I also want to dabble in tech so water cooling is on the cards some time this year

I'm trying to decide which board would best suit my needs. This will be a workhorse but i want to play the latest gamesat the highest possible res, splitting my time may be 70:30 to work. Workwise consists of distributed/cluster computing software development but I also do photo and video editing.

I've narrowed it down to z77 socket 1155 from either gigabyte or asus. Budget is ~£300 but that's not to say I want to spend that much if I can help it! The chip I had in mind is the Intel Core i7-3770K

I need it to future proofing, to get me through the next 5-8 years, so latest tech, bells and whistles would be nice as is an ability to over clock to get the most out of it.

I'll be starting off with on board graphics but I see myself quickly moving up the the ladder to single, dual may be treble graphics cards so it must support that.

Built in wifi would be nice for a more cleaner, all in one system and on board sound should be enough for me.

I'd like thunderbolt but I think this is only because I don't feel left out! Does anyone currently use it? (The monitor I have my on by the way is the Dell u3014).

Is going for the Gigabyte Z77X-UP7 overkill for my needs or should I be aiming for the Gigabyte Z77X-UP5 TH? There's only ~£50 but every penny counts :p

Thank you for your patience in what's turned out to be a longer post than I intended :D

Thanks stulid :)

Might be a strange one but why does it not offer 3 way SLI in the same way as crossfire? Are boards more compatible with one flavour over another?

Nvidia won't certify 3-way SLI if one of the slots is less than 8X speed.
