Is there a quick way to ascertain what firewalls are in use?

Pretty sure XP firewall is active on host plus possible antiviral software (F-Secure) firewall

Looks like the networking is working fine.

Firewalls now. You need to confirm which firewalls are actice on the 2 computers. The second one might have a third party firewall if it's an old PC from work or wherever. After you find out that info you need to check which firewall rules are in effect and stopping your from accessing the internet on the second PC.

Am I correct in assuming that the main PC is functioning correctly as far as the internet goes and it's onlt the second PC that is having trouble connecting to the internet?

I am on MSN for a while if you want to try and speed things up a bit.

Okay - after several evenings of fiddling around I still cannot get either machine to properly see the other

there is a shared internet connection but no shared folders/files. Very frustrating. Possibly firewall related, but not altogether convinced.

BTW Thanks so much for your help & patience the other night on MSN, ns400r!

You need to look into the group policy on the second PC. That PC was once on a corporate network and may still have certain group policies in effect that may be limiting your attempts at networking (it certainly is stopping the Remote Desktop feature). And the firewall(s) of course.

a complete reformat if possible of the old corperate machine would prob be the easiest way to make sure nothing is getting in your way
