A friend has asked me for advice on NAS setups. I haven't a clue but I did tell him someone on OCUK might be able to help

His requirements are:

"So 4tb music, HD for streaming. Was thinking about WD Red drives (2)"

I'm not even sure what half of that means but maybe you do. Can post questions to him if you have any :)

Thanks

Consider Synology, not the cheapest by any means but they make excellent units and their software and support is very good.

I guess it really depends on what features you want/need. I used a cheap Dlink (£50) dual bay NAS for about 3/4 years with no issues what so ever. It never needed rebooting, didn't crash or fall over - but it also wasn't that feature packed compared to something like a Qnap or Synology one.

Synology for me by far!

I've tried a few and the user interface you get with DSM is by far the best (and let's face it, it's the only part of the NAS that you will generally interact with!)

I'm biased but I love my Synology, yes its a 212j and a few years old but still supported by them and works flawlessly. Their support was excellent too when I needed to contact them.

Another vote for Synology here. What I would say is figure out what software you want to use, and then check that it supports the NAS you want to buy. Not all software works on all NAS.

Be careful with some of the newer Synology enclosures if you are looking to use Plex, as some are not compatible. The DS214 range seems to be least supported by Plex.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. I got the impression from the Plex support forums that until Synology paid them to do a fix on their previous port, they weren't going to do anything, despite their customers asking for it.

I prefer Serviio anyway, and there's a port for ARM that works on Synology as it's JAVA based.

Thanks guys. Sorry LordBarrass - I did hesitate before adding the link but I figured everyone knows of the said competitor.
All the same, I won't do it again :)
