So I brought a few PC parts, new case and hard drives (no main components). Moved everything over into the new case after giving it a good clean with compressed air and a vaccum cleaner.

Finally got round to pressing the power button, the fans started to spin (case fans, cpu fan, gfx fan) (I thought great no problems for once) but thats all it does, fans spin for a while and eventually the power will cut out.

I've checked everything I can think off - checked all connections, went down to a single RAM stick and checked each one in different slots. removed all my new hard drives in case they were somehow drawing too much power.

I usually get a single "everything is OK" beep which I'm not receiving.

I had a similar problem a few months ago that meant I needed a new power supply. So I had made the assumption it couldn't be this again as its rather new.

What do you guys think the cause is? power, processor or something else. I'm completely out of ideas.

Tried the old clear CMOS trick?

tried that, made absolutely no difference. I think its got to be processor or power supply, unfortunately I won't be able to get my hands on a spare psu for a few days so atm I can't test that theory.

On the plus side I was planning on upgrading in a few months when bulldoser cpus are released but might just bring it forward and go for an i5 with an over the top psu.

The first and last time I used compressed air on my motherboard, it done exactly the same... spins up, nothing happens...

I didn't know anything about hardware really back then, so I had to get a new mobo/processor bundle... :(

Could it be the motherboard?

if all fans are trying to kick in your psu should be okay, is there anyway you can test the motherboard at all.

can you list your system for us.

I can recommend the i5 2500k, awesome chip :)

I think with compressed air, it sprays cold so causes slight surface moisture to build up, that would not be good for a mobo, i never use compressed air on anything electrical, just spray my case out and thats it.

Are all the power cables connected - 24 pin to motherboard, 4/8 pin to motherboard for CPU and any 6/8 pin cables to the graphics card?

Did you remember to use the motherboard standoffs?

None of the metal tabs on the rear I/O plate shorting any connections?

I'm afraid to say it, but that's probably why. Vacuums generate a huge amount of static, I've seen people kill builds with them before.

Obviously it could be something else but.

My system is a bit outdated.

Motherboard-Gigabyte GA-N650SLI-DS4l
CPU-Intel E2200
GFX-8800GTS 512MB
RAM-kingston hyperx 4gb ddr2 pc2-6400
PSU-CoolerMaster Silent Pro600w

connections were the first things I checked, all perfectly fine. Motherboard standoffs were used and there doesn't seem to be anything causing a short.

Any luck>?

unbelievably yes, I completely rebuilt the system from the ground up removing everything from the case and started again.

Didn't notice anything in particular but turned on the power the fans spooled up and then the fan controller kicked in and set them to the right speed.

Something must have been shorting the connection or I didn't leave it long enough when doing the cmos trick.

absolutely rooky mistake  at least now I can hold off upgrading until the AMD cpu release (unless they get delayed again)

Thanks great, and also well done on updating. a lot of users post a problem, get it sorted and never re post it now works :D
