I'm looking to replace a really quite aged laptop for my other half. She hasn't yet made the Apple transition and so this needs to be Windows. Not looking for a gaming machine, so no serious graphics required. Key requirements are:

- must have a separate number pad on the keyboard
- relatively lightweight and slim
- good battery life
- no need for touch screen
- hdd space doesn't need to go beyond 250 gb

No flip or Surface-style recommendations please - that sort of chassis will scare her.

Do you have a preferred size of laptop? And though it doesn't need to be powerful getting one with a SSD would be a real charm!

No real budget in mind - if pushed I guess I'd like to keep it under £1,000.

The size isn't really important, but I figure that the need for a number pad means that pretty much anything under 15" isn't going to be possible anyway.

Have you considered using an external USB numpad?

^^^ This and a i5 dell xps 13 would be ace ( bear in mind the 13s are quite small though! ) would probably cost 750 total and under her workload should be outstanding performance with no slowdowns!

The i5 with 1080p dell claims the battery lasts about 15 hours but don't expect that, its more like 12-13. They all come with SSDS and the ram is soldered onto the motherboard so once you have the laptop no upgrading ram.

Edit they are also super slim/lightweight about 1.2kg but the build quality is insanely good i think i could fall on this with a dumbel and it would be okay.

And if you went for this with a external numberpad hey ho if she comes into contact with anything without a numberpad WOOPAZ she is still good to go!

EDIT 2 = USB number pads are cheaper then i thought wow!

I know a lot of people in the forum will give you advice on Dell & HP etc.

But I'm gonna give you some other options :D

You might want to take a look at Fujitsu E754 & A555 series, they have the option for a 1080p, and a very classy laptop overall :)

If no external number pad then i am not sure.

I know SOME laptops have a number pad built into them but as a alt FN+ num lock key so you can use the usual area as a number pad as the keys have small numbers on them representing what numbers they are.

But i take it that wont be as she wants i understand the requirement of a number pad it does make number crunching massively faster!
