Help needed - MSI gtx970 and power supply

HI all,

ive just got my MSI GTX 970 - arrived on time so thanks OC

my question is power connection related..

SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply


this is my power supply and it comes with the PCI-E 6+2 pin connecter with a spur to another 6+2 pin connecter that's marked SLI. the card obviously needs both the 6+2 and a 6 to work but is it safe to use the SLI extension for the 6pin so they are running off the one cable?

don't want to damage the card, PS or motherboard doing this so thought I'd as first.
