Hi all, i am in need of a lil help.

My PC will not boot into windows. Here's what happened, ive been using pc all day then notice it lagging when opening a mp4 video in QT. so i tried to open task manager to close QT and it gave me an error. I then tried Ctrl Alt Del and same weird error. so i went to reboot. Now i get this:

Every time I boot, the green bar scrolls across the screen thinks for a lil while, the mouse cursor shows up and for a split second i can move the mouse, but then the PC reboots. Upon rebooting, my system fails to detect that there is a raid. and ofc goes through the motions of booting but fails to find the OS. (This does not find the raid thing has happened before and usually i just reboot and its all ok) But now when i reboot the whole thing just repeats it self.

I have done 3 window repairs which tried 2 system restores and on the 3rd one it says it cannot do anything else.

I consider myself a fairly knowledgeable and safe user. I run and do weekly scans of kaspersky AV, spybot S+D, maywarebytes anti malware, superantispyware

Hardware:
Q6600
Abit IP35 pro
4x 1gb Gskill HZ 6400

Now i do have my CPU overclocked so I have put it back to stock speed of 2.66ghz. But im not sure what the stock voltage is for the CPU (maybe its getting too hot - unlikely but ill try) so i've put voltage down to 1.25. I still get the same process repeating. I've also tried booting into safe mode with the same results.

My next suspicion is the raid is at fault i really really hope it isnt :( any ideas what to do next or what to check?

any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance.

raid 0 :(

so if it goes belly up its all gone right? the raid is still there in that it can see it and tries to boot... so i dunno. next thing im gona check is the intel raid manager thing. Its the on board raid manager on the Abit IP35 pro.

intel raid storage matrix or something.

Maybe one of the disks has failed. Download the HDD diagnostic tools from the manufacturers website and verify them.

Have you got recent backups?

ill try to do that... erm backups none :S i was looking at whole raid backup things before but never got around to it. i have a 3rd HD not in raid with some stuff backed up but not my latest work which i had zipped up on my Desktop DOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Back up software costs hardly anything. Lesson learnt

If you need your data, you could use http://www.knoppix.org/ and boot from CD (no install required). This way you can get to your data. That is of course that the disk hasn't failed.

Next thing is to try reinstalling windows as a single array (or JBODs) rather than in RAID. This will verify that each disk is working ok and therefore has to be a RAID problem.

Another Question i have 3 HDs only 2 are in raid. Could i install windows on the 3rd HD and still be able to see the raid(assuming no failure) and back up my data?

Cheers for the help huddy!

ok one more thing lol

ive tried windows repair one more time and theres a command prompt option. it allows me to browse all of C and im in the process of copying my work to the stand alone non raid drive. does this mean the raid is still in one piece and that windows is to blame?

hmmmmmmmmmm

/edit also u can browse USB drives in here, so im in the process of backing up all my work files with robocopy!!! hopefully it will work.

If you can see the data on the drives that are in raid then it sounds like the RAID is intact.

When you repaired the system, did you load the correct RAID drivers from the diskette? It's quite easy to install the wrong ones. I've done this loads of times.. Installed the HDD drivers.. but not the RAID drivers.

hi huddy, i've backed up all my work via the command prompt and robocopy. saved 4gig of data that works on my laptop fine.

when i repaired the system it already shows my raid in the box. 9xxgb which is the 2x 500gb in raid 0. so that should mean the raid drivers are already loaded. but ill try again just to double check.

if no change i am tempted to do a 2nd install of windows on the raid and just use the 2nd install. how dangerous is this?

my HDD configuration is 2x 500gb in raid 0. and a 3rd 500gb on its own.

i am thinking of installing windows vista on the 500gb on its own then copying the rest of the data across from the raid. Then dismantling the raid setup. leaving 3 x 500gb in no raid.

I guess that means i have to change the SATA controller from raid to IDE i think... will that destroy the solo vista install on the 3rd disk?

many thanks for your help n advice :)

ok scratch all that, chkdsk fixed it, i had a few orphan files that were moved about and windows fixed some errors. bobs yer uncle!!!

so happy. time to invest in some software;)
