Hi all I am having problems with my pc I built, here is the spec;

MOBO; XFX MB-N78S-8209
RAM; Kingston HYPERX ddr2 4gb
CPU; AMD Phenom X4 955 Black edition
PSU; XFX 750W

It started when I was gaming on the pc, I shut it down, then went to turn it back on again the next day and nothing...
The motherboard wasn't doing anything so I sent it back to XFX who ran tests on it and found it faulty, with the status on the invoice - "will not post" replacement needed.
Anyway the replacement motherboard arrived so I basically built my pc back up again and it didn't display any video I have also tried my xfx gts 250 video card with no luck, I could not get the board to do anything it would power up but wouldn't post, the error screen on the rear of the board had a weird sign showing, it is not any number or letters just like a broken up words of numbers if like it was broken, so I sent it back to xfx who tested it and agreed the board's led display was faulty, and they tested the board and it would not post, so they sent me another replacement!
New board arrived yesterday, I put the ram in, cpu in with heat sink, hooked up the psu, connected the video and power cables, didn't bother with the hdd.
And guess what, still no luck, it will power on fine, but won't boot up/post, the internal speaker will not sound either.
It has the error code "d5" OR "dS" on the led indicator on the back of the board too, if anyone knows what this code means?
I am curious if when the first board went faulty if it damaged any other components (cpu or ram?).
Either way it is still not working, can you offer any advise as I am not sure if this board is also faulty, but I have assumed it would be highly unlikely that 2 replacements would be faulty hence why I thought that when the first board went faulty is it possible it may have damaged the cpu or ram?
Please help as I need my pc now lol a month has passed by trying to sort this now.
thanks in advance.
PS i do not have a spare cpu to try. :(

I can't say what the problem is, not knowledgeable enough - but here's my logic:

PC worked fine. then, it broke. Motherboard no longer posts.

Replacement motherboard connected to same components - does not work.

Another replacement motherboard connected to same components - does not work.

Have you considered that one of the other components (most likely PSU) is what is causing the motherboards to fail?

You can get a thousand brand new, perfect motherboards and plug them into a faulty PSU one at a time and kill them all. Try a different PSU. (Or different everyhting, if you can.)

Hi there,

Have you trying running it with each RAM stick individually and with the RAM stick is different slots?

Also, do you have another PSU (doesn't need to be particularly powerful) to hand?

cheers for the advice it's a new psu I got a replacement one after the first broke, I don't have a spare psu to try, but I could send it back again for a replacement ? Is there any way to test a psu ?

Hi yes tried that with no luck. As above about the psu.
Thanks for the replies much appreciated ;)

So am I right in saying if it is the psu, it would have killed this mobo as well and now I need another new mobo and a psu? would it have damaged anything else if it was the psu?

A PSU might not necessarily kill anything - but I know that a PSU fault can kill other components as well - I was just worried that you were swapping mother board for motherboard for motherboard, and finding the the same symptom without finding the cause.

your question should be WHY the other motherboards are failing - maybe you got unlucky with several bad ones, and maybe it was a different random issue with each one, but when a problem persists with more than one motherboard you need to look at the other common factors and rule them out.

A PSU can no doubt be tested but I wouldn't know how to go about it.

Are you saying that when your first mobo stopped POSTING, you got a replacement PSU also?

Please don't take this as a diagnosis that it *is* your PSU, I'm just saying it's a possibility - like I said, WHY are your mobos failing, and could it be one of the other parts that has been common to each one, ie. PSU?

No, the pc started locking up, and the psu was squealing so I got a new one, and it was problem solved..
I have just tried the psu on an old pc and it worked fine? so am i right in saying the psu is fine?
cheers for the help mate! ;)

I would ask XFX why their motherboards are failing. Are they sending brand new boards out each time. Ask them to test one before it arrives with you. It seems that they are accepting that there is a fault when you return them.

update, got some ram off another pc to try and it was still the same, so tried my power supply on an old pc (in case it was blowing boards) and it worked fine, so it's not the ram, psu, I have just sent my cpu off for a replacement, hopefully it is my cpu at fault, if it isn't I'm out of idea's as there isn't any other hardware it could be bar the board itself but this is the third replacement and it is the same as the others so I am guessing it isn't the board at fault plus XFX said I am the only person to ever return this model motherboard fingers crossed it will be sorted soon as i'm getting stuck with idea's now..
