My 16yo son has a Dell 9020 SFF PC he uses for gaming - he tells me the graphics are not great and he would like to upgrade the graphics card and memory.
I have looked and looked but I'm just getting confused, particually around the graphics card.

The current PC specs are: Intel Core 15-4590 @3.30GHz. 8GB RAM

Can anyone recommend some graphics cards that will fit and that will work with the existing power unit? I would like to buy someting that will make a noticable difference, otherwise it will be a very disappointing Christmas present for him!

Huge thanks in advance

without looking at the pc specifically and just looking at the specs

i5-4590 this is a 4th generation cpu..it's old 14th gen was just replaced with core ultra(new naming scheme but basically 15th gen)..you get a new gen each year so that cpu is 11 generations behind. Any decent gpu (graphics card) will probably be hobled by the cpu now(cpu will max out and bottleneck system so you wont get the performance out of the gpu)
8gb ram..really for gaming 16gb is min now, and prefereably 32gb..a game like fortnite uses more than 16gb

so couple questions if i may

What sort of games does your son play, and what resolution is his monitor ?(saying this as a higher res monitor transfers some of the load onto the gpu and less work for the cpu, so you can get away with a slightly older cpu...but a 4th gen? I'd have to start looking that up)
also, does you son konw what sort of fps (frames per second) he's getting at the momeent, and ideally what he's trying to target

just having a quick look..it was reviewed in 2014, so 10yrs ago..£750 new..quick scan on 2nd hand sites can be bought for less than £100 (£87 for the i7 version). I'm not convinced trying to get a slim modern gpu(which unlikely to fit that case anyway) is woth the effort for such an old machine...I think starting afresh is a much better option..but of course where talking more money
if your son really want gaming, a console such as a ps5 or xsx will give hime far better gameplay than and pc for the price

Thank you for your quick response.

his monitor is :

AOC Gaming C27G2E - 27 Inch FHD Curved Monitor, 165Hz, VA, 1ms, Low Input Lag, 1500R Curved, G-Menu, Tilt (1920 x 1080 @ 165Hz, 250 cd/m², HDMI 2.0 / DP 1.2)

we really dont know what FPS we need.

Appreciate that the machine is old. I dont want to buy a GPU and find out there is not much difference. I just wondered if it would suffice for a year or so before we start investing in building a proper gaming pc ... they just seem so much £££. Maybe we just need to look for second hand ones.
