Hi Guys,

I was running a windows server 2003 as my fileserver for over 2 years now and its been fine.

However i decided to have a play with server 2008 and installed it with just the file sharing role.

But now i cannot see the Server or shares. I have it setup as follows in network and sharing:

Network Discover: Custom (Cant for some reason get it to display On)
File sharing: On
Public Folder sharing: Off
Printer Sharing: Off
Password Protected Sharing: Off

Im new to server 2008 and in general dont know a lot about it. Have i missed something like an additional role to install or something? All i want the server to do is file share without needing user accounts if possible.

Cheers

Hi mate, you need to install the file sharing service from server manager.

Then right click your share and add "everyone". This will allow "guests" too, or those with no accounts.

Hi Mate,

I have installed the File Server role but none of its sub components like DFS, I have All users already selected for shares.

Really weird thing is i done the network wizard on the laptop (XP Pro) and joined the workgroup once i done this my modded Xbox with XBMC see's the workgroup and both the laptop and the servers shares. But turn the laptop off and the XBMC wont even see the workgroup.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Ross
