Hi guy's. On Monday i ordered a Powercolour 4850 PCS 1024mb card from here. Eventually turned up on Wednesday due to Citylink screwing up as usual. Did the usual, uninstalled drivers, rebooted into safe mode ran driver sweeper, shut down, removed 8800GT and installed 4850. Booted up and card was'nt detected. Installed cat's 8.10 and rebooted only to be informed that i did'nt have a ATI card supported. Ok i thought, maybe i need to do a clean install. Did this and the card was detected. Installed the drivers for everything and updated XP and then installed some games.

As soon as i tried running a game i got lock ups, crashes followed by a reboot, VPU recover or a BSOD. Did yet another format and clean install just in case i messed something up and tried 8.9. Same problem. Tried the 8.10 hotfix drivers only to have the same problem. It's not just games either. Any 3d application causes it. Personally i have had enough of this piece of crap now. Any ideas before i RMA it and go back to Nvidia? At least their drivers work. The funny thing is that i have a 3850 running perfectly fine in my other rig with 8.10 so i presume it's the card. Specs are in my siggy along with XP Home SP3 with all updates.

Cold, 35 on the core and the memory coolers are cool to the touch. It's fine in 2d it's just as soon as i try to launch a 3d app that the problems occur. Instant lock up as soon as i click on the game/app.

have you got direct x installed maybe a stupid question but you havent stated yuo have.

does sound duff though mine was fine, same card same people

Yep. Aug 2008 update too. I reckon it's faulty. Just not sure what to go for as a replacement now. For the price range the best Nvidia card would be a 9800GTX+ and i am not sure that is much of an upgrade from my 8800GT (which is sold).

Well, i have sort of fixed it. First off i tried swapping from the primary to the secondary pci-e plug from my psu with no improvement. Swapped back to the primary and took the card out, checked it over and stuck it back in. No improvement. Next i downloaded a load of older driver versions and found that if i install only the 8.9 bare drivers it works. It would seem that CCC is the cause of my problems. Saying that the bare 8.10 driver does'nt work either. Not happy at all. I expect something to work when i install it and not have to fanny around trying this, that and everything. They really need to sort out thier drivers. :(

Pasty, uninstall the drivers
Install the drivers from the disk that came with the card.
Chose the control panel on that disk to use when your choosing apps to install.
Using the control panel that came on the disk will sort out your problem (I hope)

Later when you update drivers off the net, ONLY download the driver, not the complete package with CCC included in the install, OK

Try that, used to always work for me.

Since CCC works fine for most other people, I suspect it's something in your install that's causing issues.

As its a fresh clean install of XP i can't see what could be causing it. There is another guy on here with the same problem as me with the exact same card. Maybe it's something to do with the 1024Mb of ram.

Tried that too. I might do a fresh install, yet again, over the weekend and try with a bare XP installation. No updates etc. See if it will work then.

Remember you need Net framework installed for CCC to work.

I always used something other than CCC when I have a ATI card installed.

Got it already along with it's service packs. Does'nt work with the bare driver either.

Well, my "fix" was short lived. As soon as i logged off here last night and booted up the main pc it was back to being broke again. Crashes, lock ups and BSOD's.

How's this for a crash?

Had enough of this thing now and it's going back.

Tried some other things this afternoon. Took out my sound card and uninstalled the drivers. Same result. Tried Fur benchmark again and got this:-

Definately a faulty card as i stuck my 3850 in the pc and it works. Even with the Cat 8.10 hotfix drivers. Even more confirmation is that the 3850 crucifies the 4850 in the Fur benchmark by over 1500 points!! Well it's all sorted now. I sent a webnote to OCUK requesting a RMA before tea time and they have accepted it so first thing on Monday it's getting posted off. Thing is what to get now? Really don't want another 4850 after this farce so i guess it's a poxy 9800GTX+. Not really something to get excited about but for £140 that's about it.

Ouch - 9800GTX+ is an ok card but not a huge step up from a good 8800GT.

There was me thinking the 4850 was relatively well behaved compared to the 4870.

Thing is, the GT is sold. One of my mates made me a very good offer for my 8800GT, E6600 and Ballistix PC2 8500. He wanted the P5E as well but no way is he having that.

I can't get enthusiastic about a 9800GTX+ either. It's ok but not £140 ok if you see what i mean. Tempted now to try a 512mb 4850 and hope that this was a one off. My 3850 in my other pc works fine with any driver in both pc's. No gaming pc at the moment. :(
