Hi.

Following on from my thread a wee while ago I decided to buy a Leadtek 7600GTas my old card went kaput.

So I decided to start afresh with a window reinstall. However, I have come across a major problem. Every time I try to install the drivers, the installation crashes and I'm left with part installed drivers. Thus far, I've tried the drivers on the disc, and also a set of 91.47 drivers from the nVidia site.

After this process I can increase the resolution to a useable level, but simple 2d stuff like scrolling through a webpage is done at (literally) 1fps.

There's obviously a major problem somewhere, but I have really not got a clue where.

I've got:

AMD 64 3000
Maxtor DiamondBack 200Gb SATA
ASRock K8Upgrade

Can anyone help?

Very much obliged.

well for sure the drivers have not installed properly, so best thing to do is DL driver cleaner and delete the lot.

You should be installing drivers in this order:

WinXP
Chipset
GFX
onboard items.

I usualy tend to disable as much in BIOS of the onboard devices that will not be needed till after I have installed the chipset/GFX , then I enable them to instal the relevant drivers - this way if you do get a conflict, you can figure out what it actualy is.

Thanks for the reply.

By disabling onboard devices, I think you mean the onboard audio? What else is included in that. The LAN? Apologies, I'm never really in the BIOS.

Also, there is a modem in one of the PCI slots. Obviously there was no problem with the ATi card I had before, but is it worth removing it just in case?

I should maybe add that it is the AGP version of the card.

I'll get all the drivers off tomorrow morning before I start tinkering again.

Thanks again.

Hrm.. I had no problem myself with the driver install. Did you have an ATi card before it? Use driver cleaner to get rid of the ATi drivers and any nVidia drivers you have already installed then reboot the machine. Let it load the default windows drivers if it can then try install 91.47. That worked fine for me.

I doubt an IRQ conflict would cause a problem with the driver install but just in case if that doesn't work then try moving the modem to a different slot or removing it until you get the drivers installed.

Everest can tell you what IRQ addresses all your devices are using. Try downloading it and look in the Devices section to see if there are any conflicts with the AGP slot.

WinXP does'nt have IRQ problems like 98 used too :)

Yeah onboard Lan, Sound and anything else extra - especialy if you dont need to use it - like Parrel ports 9if your board has it).

Clean your Drivers out with DriverCleaner ( http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.php) and re-instal lin the right order as I have said.

Also its a good idea, that you have the latest mainboard driver too, along with the nVidia ones for your GFX.

Heh.. Tell that to my Audigy 2 when it tried to use the same IRQ channel as my 7600GT. Nasty nasty things happened. It could be my cheap Asrock board though.

I'm going to check tomorrow if I can move it to another slot where it won't interfere with the gfx card.

IRQ issues may be a lot less with XP but they can still cause problems.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I've removed the modem, switched off the onboard audio and LAN, cleaned out every single driver, reinstalled in the order above... and still! Every time... installation of the drivers fails half way through.

The screen just goes blank, pauses for a while, then the computer restarts.

I'm completely stumped :(

It wouldn't be faulty hardware surely?

Ok, some developments.

I tried installing the drivers on the CD in safe mode. Instead of crashing, I got a message saying something vaguely along the lines of "May not be Leadtek hardware", which is obviously false. So, I wiped those drivers off with DC, started in safe mode again, and tried to install the 91.47 Forceware drivers I got from the nVidia site. This time, they installed properly, prompted me to restart.

Now however, the computer crashes when loading the 'light blue signing in screen'. So I started in safe mode, disabled the GC, restarted into Normal Windows and it loaded properly. I then enabled the card again, which it did with no problems. However, I tried to change the resolution to 1280x1024... it crashed.

Obviously, there is still something wrong, despite the drivers going on properly (apparently).

Any ideas?

Possibly a hardware fault. I think it's time for an RMA if you still can't get it working.

I have the exact same card and I didn't have any problems.

I remember about a month before I got my card there were a few cases of hardware faults in the Leadtek 7600GT range.

Just reinstalled Windows. Same problem.

Contacted Leadtek Europe. Not had a reply yet, which is unsurprising being a Friday night after all. Plus, they're in Holland so they're probably all stoned. I know I would be :)

If they can find a way for me to confirm it is a hardware fault, I'll contact OcUK then. Don't fancy sending it back and getting charged £10 because it isn't a hardware fault.

Anyway. Thanks for all the help guys. You shall be forever remembered in books and songs.

Oh, and have a good weekend ;)

sorry, if none of that is working then you need to give more details if you want help :(

Precise Leadtek model number
Motherboard

Try checking the Asrock site or emailing them to ask if the 7600GT is compatible with that board. I have the Asrock DUAL-VSTA and like I said it works without a problem. Try updating your BIOS to the latest version from their website.

I definitely have the AGP driver installed. I installed the CPU driver and the AGP driver, then tried the Graphic Card drivers.

I'm kind of confused how to update the BIOS:

1. Create a bootable system floppy disk.

2. Download an updated ASRock BIOS file (WinZip format with .zip file extension) from the web site, unzip the BIOS file and save both ASRFLASH.EXE utility and BIOS file to the disk you created in step 1.

I make a system floppy by right-clicking on a:\ in My Computer, then selecting Format and checking the 'Create an MS-DOS startup disk' box. Right? Then where do I copy the files to? Just straight onto the floppy disk?

I really don't want to screw up my Motherboard ;)

Not allowed to swear mate ! edit it quick !
You read this from the site right ?

»Updating BIOS Procedures
1. Create a bootable system floppy disk.
2. Download an updated ASRock BIOS file (WinZip format with .zip file extension) from the web site, unzip the BIOS file and save both ASRFLASH.EXE utility and BIOS file to the disk you created in step 1.
3. Boot from the disk you created in step 2.
4. At the "A:\" prompt, type ASRFLASH, hit space bar once, and type BIOS file name then press <Enter>. For example: A:\ASRFLASH K7S41GX2.00 <Enter> then you will see a message "Please wait for BIOS loading ROM".
5. After 30 seconds, you will see the message "Flash ROM Update Completed - Pass", then you have finished upgrading the BIOS.
6. After finishing upgrading the BIOS, please remove the floppy disk. Restart your system and press <F2> to enter the BIOS setup utility during boot up.
7. In Exit menu, please select "Load Default Settings" and press <Enter> to continue.
8. Select "Exit Saving Changes" and press <Enter> to exit the BIOS setup utility.
9. Now, system is booting up with new BIOS.

»Notice
If you encounter problems while updating the new BIOS, DO NOT turn off your system since this corrupt BIOS might cause your system failed to boot up. Just repeat the process, and if the problem still persists, update the original BIOS file. If the Flash Memory Writer utility was not able to successfully update a complete BIOS file, your system may not be able to boot up. If this happens, your system will need service.

Step one is something you do in windows, I believe you right click on the floppy drive in my computer ?

Anyway, it really is safe to do if you follow the instructions exactly, I did it with exactly the same motherboard.
After creating the disk, go into your bios & set '1st boot device' as floppy A. The proceed as per the instructions.
I had a 6600GT not work with that MOBO, bios update cured it.

EDIT
Just re-read your post. Yes, yyou do exactly what you were going to do.
