Hi all i hope someone can give me any advice on a problem i seem to be having.

Firstlt the components i have are.

CPU
Name Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Codename Kentsfield
Specification Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz
Package Socket 775 LGA (platform ID = 4h)
CPUID 6.F.7
Extended CPUID 6.F
Core Stepping B3
Technology 65 nm
Core Speed 1600.1 MHz (6.0 x 266.7 MHz)
Rated Bus speed 1066.7 MHz
Stock frequency 2400 MHz

Heatsink.
Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7

Motherbord
Asus Commando
Bios Commando1703.ROM

Ok the problem i am having is that when i boot in to the bios the temp is showing me 42 degrees and when i boot in to windows CoreTemp is showing me that core0 is at 50/52 Degrees and the other three cores are at 42 degrees at idle. I do not think that this is to good.

The bios is set to defualt settings so no overclock as far as i know. Basicly i am worried incase 1. my cpu is damaged or something else is wrong.

Can anyone give me some feedback on what i should be seeing temp wise or if i have missed something.

Thanks in Advance.

/mark.

core 0 is doing windows type stuff and the other three are idle?
a anti-virus scan is occuring on startup?
MS autoupdates / scvhost.exe using up cpu cycles?

Check windows task manager to see if your cpu graphs are jumping around. And if so does this settle down after a few minutes or so.

The CPU Usage is around 5% and the Processes running are System idle at 93/97% and explorer/task manager and svchost rotating. I uninstalled the anti virus so i can make sure its not stressing the cpu at start-up.

Are the temps ment to be this high for the q6600? as i thought they were meant to be around the 35 degrees mark at idel with no overclock?

Thanks for the feedback.

I just run Prime95 and the stress test with 4 threads all running at 100% for 2 mins the temps where

0 = 65
1 = 60
2 = 54
3 = 54

once back to idle (4% cpu usage) they drop back to

0 = 49
1 = 44
2 = 42
3 = 42

is one pin not fully engaged?
or could be an uneven IHS

run prime again and press down on each pin in turn keeping and eye on coretemp.

two core hotter that the other two is normal ish for unlapped chips

Ok i have the case open on the desk and i am typing one haded with my other hand on the HS.

The temps now are

0 = 47/48
1 = 42
2 = 40
3 = 40

All four pins are seucre

My best guess is the IHS is low at one corner, as the extra pressure drop all cores by 2c but only 1-2c on the 'hot' core - you could re-seat the cooler but looks like lapping is your only answer.

that said your load temps don't seam unreasonable for a ACPro with an unlapped stock chip. Stick within and don't worry

75c is considered max. Lapping is when you sand dowh the cpu heatspreader and the base of the cpu cooler so they are as near flat as possible.
