Hi

Networking isn't my strong point I'm afraid, so before I go and mess things up I'm seeking advice first!

My current setup includes;

Virgin 200mb cable connection using the SuperHub 2 in modem mode > connected to > Asus RT-AC56U, which does all the routing and Wifi to devices etc.

I've recently got a TalkTalk 80mb FTTC service via their HG633 router. This is purely a backup line really, and it's basically there if the Virgin connection drops.

I believe the Asus Router has a feature called Dual WAN. So I'm looking to use this if possible to allow the TalkTalk broadband to kick in if the Virgin connection drops out.

So how would I go about setting this up? The questions I've got so far inlclude;

Is there a way to set the TalkTalk HG633 into a modem only mode like the SH2?

The IP address of the AC56U is currently the same as the HG633, so is there a way to change the IP of the HG633 to something else so if they are connected it won't cause a conflict?

What do I need to configure in the HG633 and AC56U to enable all this to happen?

Hopefully this makes sense!

Thanks! :D

Is Virgin's connection so unreliable that you need a backup?

No idea, most ISP supplied router's don't. If it doesn't, grab a secondhand HG612 Openreach modem (<£20).

The IP address of the AC56U is currently the same as the HG633, so is there a way to change the IP of the HG633 to something else so if they are connected it won't cause a conflict?

Almost certainly, have you logged into it to see what settings are available? You'd usually look where the DHCP server settings are.

Start by reading this and see if it applies to your router.

The VM connection isn't that unreliable, but I'd prefer zero down time if possible.

I've been doing some research and it appears that the HG633 can't be put into a modem only mode like the SH2.

So I'll see if I can acquire the HG612 and try that approach.

I'm only really doing it to stop me having to switch wires about if a connection goes down, or get a call from home saying the internet has gone down, knowing nobody at home would be able to wire up the alternative.
