Well its my mum has the problem, she has 10meg broadband cable modem which is connected in the livingroom, but her pc is in the back room and has a 20 mtre cable running from modem to pc for her internet connection.

She has had this setup for over 2years, so the cable is starting to split and showing the internal wires and may cause problems later.

I`ve told her to go wireless, but the internet provider will charge £40 to go wireless or £40 for a replacement cable and she doesn`t want to pay this.

I can cut out the bad part of the cable, but what would I need to use to join the ethernet cable back together and how to do it?

Thanks!!!!

Just buy a new cable, only a few quid. No point going wireless when wired is always the better option if it isn't hassle to run the length :)

Or, if pulling the old cable out is a major problem, you can just buy a new RJ45 connector and crimper and simply cut the knackered section off and put a new connector on.

Google RJ45, I "think" that's what you mean/need.

RJ-45 is just what the connector at the end of an ethernet cable is.

To the OP, I would just buy a new ethernet cable, there only a couple of quid.. Hardly a dent in the bank. :)

Not worth the hassle trying to re-solder it, if that is possible anyway if you've severed it badly and at the wrong point.

You dont solder the cables you use a crimping tool. Exposed wires are not a problem I assume they are still insulated and its just the outer cable thats frayed
