Hi all,

I am currently working on a project, but I am unsure of posting too many details, but I need your help.

It has come to my attention that 4 spitfires were sold (I think) to a salvage/scrap yard/metal merchant at the end of the second world war. The planes were complete and the scrappie was on the outskirts of Birmingham.

I have no idea of scrapyard's name, exact location or any other info on the planes themselves which only leaves me with one avenue to follow.

How would I go about contacting the RAF and trying to get a list of all the spitfires sold at around that time?

hmm, lets see just how many numbers on that website there actually is??

I tried a couple of numbers from there today and was basically told that they couldn't help. I have a huge list of others to try from there as well as a few others from other sites.

I posted here purely for the reason that maybe just one member here has done something similar before and can point my in the right direction. Just linking to general sites that anyone can google themselves is hardly going to help me is it?

Were sold and were complete. Just FYI :)

Thanks mate, grammer/spelling goes out the window when I am this tired :D

You're welcome, nice to find someone who doesn't treat a spelling correction as a question of their manliness. I would have thought it nigh on impossible to trace sales from the direction you're going, ie from the scrapper to the scrappee, as at the time they just wanted rid and were unlikely to keep any records of who bought any particular aeroplane and what they did with it. I saw a programme recently where a team restored a tank and all the info they uncovered was from the people who drove and owned it since, the govt was amazingly ignorant or unwilling when it came to tracing the chassis.
