My parents have recently bought a new place in Spain. They've replaced the gate (pic below shows the old gate) with a big heavy metal gate which slides along a ^ shaped bar in the floor.

When i got there the space inside the premises was covered with small stones, my mum had bought about 5 tonnes of extra stones (different colour!) which she wanted spreading over the existing ones.

One issue we found when we got there was that because the space behind the gate is on an incline the stones slide down and congregate around the gate runner, especially when driving in and out. This makes opening and closing it quite difficult at times. Every couple of days i'd sweep the stones back up the drive area which made it a lot smoother.

My worry is that they're getting the gate motorised and i'm concerned that it could end up straining and blowing the motor if it's coming up against resistance rather than a nice smooth runner.

My initial thought was that it might be worth digging a bit of a gulley for the stones to slide into but this would just put us back to square one when it filled up.

The other though was to put a little barrier in front of the gate, but then i was concerned about what that might do to the tyres of the car!

Anyone got any ideas?

To be honest Gravel of any type is a poor platform for a drive way because of the loss. Only way I can think of is to put a curved edge next to the runner in a C shape so the gravel sits under the edge of it and makes it easier on your tyres.
