Help Needed with Steam

I was checking the Black ops 3 DLC in
<Steam Library - Properties>.... when I unticked the Awakening DLC install. When I ticked it again it started to download - which I cancelled.
I have since started COD and can verify that the awakening DLC is showing as not installed.
I do (did) have this installed prior to this so question is..is it still there and if so where is it and how do I get steam to recognise it again or do I have to re-download.

Tick the box and it will download the files again. Once done state will changed to install.

Do I HAVE to download again though - is it not already there but now just not seen?

Yep. It will redownload the files for the DLC, its why it started downloading something when you checked the box.
