help needed, XFX ATI 7950 DD issue

Yes - I do not believe that it would do any harm.

And you have I think , in a way , made cooling the ram a little harder as applying the paste direct to the ram chips provides , a cooling method of ram >paste>cooler whereas you have now ram>paste>pad>paste>cooler.

Am not sure that it would make much of a difference but it would make some.

Also the pad that the company provide is a fair bit thicker than the small amount of paste that you would use - even if an excellent pad it's thickness could make it poorer at cooling.

If your not sure that replacement with paste would cool properly:-
1) put on thin paste , connect and tighten.
2) Dismantle and see where the paste has marked (or not) the block.- Adjust as required.

(Because I made of a dogs dinner the 1st time round , I had to re-assemble - I found that the paste I had applied (as thin a cover as I could get away with) was doing the job and this gave me piece of mind for next time)

I hope the above helps - possibly worth a go BUT unless your lucky I would think that the problem will never go fully away and therefore selling is , probably, the best and final solution!

I keep coming back to the fact that the problem existed before you added waterblock - ergo no matter that the block might be ill fitted etc you would still have the problem :(

However ignoring that.

Using pads instead of much thinner paste (and without wishing to nag aquacomputing instructions do say use paste on the chips not pads!) may well result in the core not getting the full/even contact with the block that it should. Which might cause the core to overheat/heat unevenly.

For what it will cost you get some non-conductive paste - dismantle- check and clean up - apply paste (thin!!) to core and ram and pads(new if the old are no longer useable) to vrms (per aquablocks instructions)- re-assemble AND keep fingers crossed.

Hey thanks for your reply,

Yeah will try that, you're probably right, the issue may never go away but it's worth a try, especially as even the stock cooler was poorly pasted / padded when i took it off, so you never know

Hey just to let you guys know i have fixed the problem.

I remembered i did put thermal paste on the ram and put pads on the vrm so i have not taken the water block off to re apply.

What i had noticed is that after extensive testing i noticed the card crashed more when it was a low temp, say 30c, it stopped crashing more when it got a little warmer.

So i increased the voltage through Afterburner and since then its been stable, no crashes no matter what i do.

Now whether this is due to the card having issues running cold, just a voltage issue or even a soldered crack that needed to heat up, either way its fixed for now.

Thanks to all you guys for your replies and suggestions
