Im looking to put togerther a cheap pc to do general things on ie, surf net, music etc i need this to be as low cost under £100 i have the rest of the gear just need a mobo and cpu ive already got a gig of DDR PC3200 ram.

Any Ideas? I was thinking of -

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail £42.29)

Abit AN-M2 Micro ATX (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £51.69

ps.
It will need to be a micro atx mobo also small case..

The only problem is AM2 is not compatable with DDR RAM, you need DDR2 RAM for AM2, if you can get a 939 system that will use DDR1.

Asrock 939NF6G-VSTA Micro ATX (Socket 939) PCI-Express DDR Motherboard
£46.99 inc VAT

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - OEM
£39.94 inc VAT

Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940)
£5.86 inc VAT

£102.48 delevered inc VAT

i reckon you look on auction sites, hardly anyone makes 939 boards, you can prob get a decent 1 there and a faster cpu too.

939 is dead. That would be just a waste of money with no upgrade path. I reckon you would be better off shopping around for a cheap 775 M-atx mobo that is C2D compatiable, getting a P4 off the bay for the time being, (i got a 3.06ghz P4 for £6.35 off the bay for my second pc and it is currently running at 3.4ghz). With the rest you can get a 2gb kit of PC-5300 ddr2 for around £50.

When you can afford a bit more or when you sell your current bits you can upgrade the P4 to a C2D. This is what i have done until i replace my 4300 in my main rig. When it's replaced it will go in my second pc and the P4 goes back on the bay. My 775 M-atx mobo is a Foxconn 946GZ7MA-8KRS2H and cost me just over £40. It's a cracking little mobo and even has a full speed 16x pci-e slot if i need it.

939 might be dead but if he wants to keep his ddr1 ram for now that may be his only choice. Plus most people I know change their board with a new cpu anyway so doesn't affect them if a certain socket is no longer in use. I have a 775 board that if I want the next intel CPU's will need replacing (P965 chipset).

Actually a lot of the 965P chipsets do support the new 1333 fsb cpu's (DS3P rev 2.0 onwards included). Not sure about Penryn though. What i suggested gives him a decent spec for his £100 and when he sells his current bits he can get a C2D of some sort. At least he will have something current. Best to sell the DDR while it's still worth something.

My 775 M-atx mobo cost me £40.27, i got a 2GB kit of Corsair XMS PC2-5400 C4 for £46 and my P4 3.06ghz cpu off the bay for £6.35. That's £92.35 in total for a half decent, easily upgradeable base rig.

Thanks for the advise guys this doesnt need to be great its just basicly something small for purely web browsing nothing too strenious and it doesnt need to be upgraded either so thats not a problem.

The spec johnno did sounds like it will do the trick aslong as all the parts are compatable and its round 100 ish im not too bothered

Also do you guys think a 200w psu would be adiquate for the above the only other thing i would say uses much if anything is a mx 4400

200W is probably pushing it. Is your GFX card AGP or PCI-e, boards with AGP support are becoming harder to find. However I think that board I recommended does have onboard GFX so not a problem if you choose that.
