Help Needed

i've been asked to look at a computer for a friend as it doesn't work.

He kept getting the blue screen and now the computer wont boot up.

I've removed everything apart from the main hard drive but can't get the monitor to come on.

Any ideas?

unplug everything apart from 1 stick of ram, cpu, motherboard and graphics (onboard or card)

and see if you can power it up and get an output on screen...

Do the fans start up ect, can you test parts in another machine.

everything now starts up even the screen, but how do i go about reconnecting the hard drives etc...

all i get on screen is -

reboot and select proper boot device

it's a fairly old system using ide drives.

try 1 drive at a time untill you find the faulty component

right - i've found the drive loaded with windows - it loads up normal but then says windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
system32\drivers\pci.sys

update - it said to press r, and now the system recovery is running.

pop in the os installation disk, reboot and run a system repair

should work mate, all the stuff on the disk etc will be on the recovery partition, just incase people loose the disk

im taking it this was a pre-build system.? by a manufacturer

yeah hp.

i think something that was inside has broken, as he kept getting blue screens, so if/when this restore works, i'll be adding everything until it keeps crashing again.
Then i'll know whats the problem.

ok guys, both hard drives are in.

however when i add my two cd drives the monitor wont come on?

any ideas?

as soon as i plug in the other ide cable, the monitor wont turn on anymore

have you tried a different ide cable.?

does the system work fine with just the hard drive and no dvd drives.?

i did try another ide cable and now it works
