Hi All,

I've recently bought a new gaming pc, put it all together, working fine. It goes to the motherboard boot menu, fine. So just as I'm about to install Windows, I move the pc slightly to access the rear USB ports, bang, it shuts down. Have been on Youtube, removing ram sticks, one at a time, removed GFX card, removed my SSD. Nothing, I have to physically remove the cable from the PSU, let the motherboard lights go off, then plug it back in to get anything. Even just a split second of power and the fans light up. Then off again.

My build is:

Any help it greatly appreciated, not exactly how I envisaged the first moments spent with a new gaming pc!

Thanks in advance,

Dario

Motherboard anti-surge protection may have kicked in. I've seen it before (on an Asus as well) when someone knocked their desk with the tower on it.

Take out the battery on the motherboard. Wait ten minutes, pop it back in, and try again.

It worked, then I moved it the TINIEST amount once the gfx card was back in and it went again, currently giving it 10 mins and ill lay it on it's side, I can't get the battery out as the gfx card is in the way.

Do you think this is the problem? Also, can I turn this surge protection off?

Thanks!

You don't want to turn surge protection off. Get a better PSU.
It sounds like something is loose, given that moving the PC causes shut down. I would wait for the new PSU, take it apart, put it back together again.

When you build the PC, you used the proper standoffs for the motherboard? You're sure there are no shorts?

When you reassemble you'll need rubbing alcohol and thermal paste for the CPU.

Also, when you tell us what parts you have, I don't want to (neither do others) click through 20 links to know what parts you have. Just print the names of the parts.

Get a Superflower GoldenGreen HX550 which is the cheapest PSU OCUK sells that doesn't suck IMO.

Definitely get a better PSU.

It's the most important part of any pc, it powers everything. A poor one going kaput can trash half your system.

Never skimp on the PSU, get a quality unit. Evga g2 is a good pick.

used that PSU with GTX 1070 - was all fine - was a budget build and used a surge Protector extension socket and so did client .

have you got a spare PSU to test out, could be PSU has gone which others suggest - and if within the 14 days you can get refund !

also another thing- test everything out of the case. Test on mobo box- this way no shorts ! and easier to put out a fire .... =/

Even if it's not the PSU at fault, I'd get a better one than that.

Not only are the better ones less likely to fail, but they have protection circuitry that stops all the components connected from getting fried in the event they do.

thats what EVGA has installed on their Super flower produced units hehe - or more to their liking :D

So last night I gave the remove battery trick a go, booted up and then back down again but after being on longer this time.... Took it back out, removed my gfx card, tried that, nothing.
Took the battery back out, and put it back in a few times, still nothing.

Anyway... I moved some wiring around as I wasn't sure if the graphics card was seated properly, booted up perfect, installed Windows 10 Pro and it was good as gold whilst installing, turned it on this morning, again, perfect. It's like nothing was even wrong? I've moved it multiple times and it doesn't cut out. Currently at work at the moment but have left it on to see if it's still running when I get home.

I'm puzzled! But I will be getting a new PSU tomorrow just to upgrade it anyway.

Never that simple, back to square one...

I'd left it laying on its side all day on the floor, get home, turn it off, install a new network card I bought today, stand it up, boot it up, same thing!!

I've now taken everything out of the case and have it on my desk, still the same thing is happening. tried installing part by part, removing certain things. It's just not having it.

Do you think it's now likely to be the motherboard itself?

Thanks
