Could it perhaps be an SSD problem?

It can be both sticks. Happened before. It can be drive ^ too.

Is this on the MSI or the Gigabyte? Because the 4 pin is necessary on the MSI. See page 9 of the manual.

If it's the Gigabyte, yes you do need to power that socket. See pages 15 and 16 of the manual.

If it's the Gigabyte, yes you do need to power that socket. See pages 15 and 16 of the manual.

It says in the manual the 12V power connector must be connected - but there are 2 x 12V connectors and I’m using the 2x4 12V rather than the 2x2 12V. This is also said here: https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/gigabyte-z390-aorus-pro-review,5.html

According to the manuals, you need to use both.

FWIW, I’ve connected up the additional 2x2 pin, but same behaviour.
I’m loathed to buy some RAM just to see if it works and send it back if it doesn’t fix it...

Well I wasn't getting my hopes up when I RMA'd the CPU - but the replacement arrived yesterday, popped it in, and voila! Everything is back to normal.

The original appears to be dead as a dodo. Surprised that it died after 3 days - maybe it's a sign I should have gone with AMD over Intel?!

Anyhow - one further question - now I have the Aorus rather than the MSI. Any major advantage to updating the BIOS (it's from December) - I'm erring on the side of "If it ain't broke..." at the moment now that I have a PC back...! I've re-installed Windows (again) as I though that was probably sensible after changing mobo manufacturer. Took a 30min call with Microsoft tech support to re-activate Windows - I think I must have hit the re-activation limit. Ended up with a new product key.

Update it. I have the non wifi Aorus Pro and we have had much better memory compatibility and stability with the latest couple of releases. Many of us with high speed DDR4 couldn't get the full speed either manually or with XMP until F9b came out (replaced with F9 now). You want the memory in slots A2 and B2 if just using a pair of sticks. There is no need to have the 4 pin cpu socket connected. I have been running a 5Ghz overclock without having that socket connected and have had no problems at all. You only really need the 4 pin connector as well as the 8 pin connector if you have a 9900k to help with power delivery when overclocking.
