Help! (New game doesnt work)

I often get that when running stuff from my DVD Writer and not the reader, as the writer sometimes has trouble with copying files off the dsic (don't know why). Basicaly the error is either your drive messing up or the disc is faulty, I have a couple of DVDs that my brother wrote for me of data and I can't copy some files off the discs as I get this error, with either of my DVD drives.

Thanks.. I'm currently trying to make an image of the Dvd on the hard disk and install it from that. Will let you know how it goes... is there any way I can tell if its the disk or my drive thats broken?
