I bought these parts:

Case, Mobo and PSU: £94
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-268-OK&groupid=43&catid=1817&subcat=

SSD 64GB: £90
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-007-CR&groupid=1657&catid=1660&subcat=1668

CPU: £155
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-266-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1944

RAM 8GB: £120
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-292-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1387

Graphics: £90

I then got everything running fine, and plugged in fine. CPU fan was connected to power, graphics card plugged in PCIx slot with power attatched, SSD plugged in fine. Installed win 7 ultimate 64x. All fans operating.

All working fine. I left it on downloading left 4 dead 2 and went out for several hours. I came back and l4d2 still wasnt done so I watched a film. Then finally it finished and I played L4d2 in highest settings.

It lasted for about an hour, then there was a loud POP and it turned off immediately.

I havent been able to turn it on since (+12 hours). I've tried changing the power supply plug to make sure it wasn't a fuse, but no luck. Nothing lights up or responds when I try and turn it on.

Nothing was overclocked, all at default settings.

I'm pretty upset because I spent 600 pounds on it in the hope that I wouldn't have any problems.

I'll plug in a spare PSU I have this evening see if that works. The psu is 500watts I think, surely that would have been enough???!?!

Forgot to mention when it popped I smelt burning plastic afterwards, quite strong.

Yeah other PSU is a value one in a crappy PC. I don't really have enough money to buy a new better quality PSU if we are talking about spending around 100 on a new one :( But next month I can but I hate to wait.
/>?
Is there any chance it's damaged my other parts? Do I need to send the whole PC back?

I also had an EMU 1820m pci soundcard plugged in which when I bought it was 350, what happens if that is damaged? :-(

Thanks for your help everyone ill leave a support message soon

To be fair, The barebones used here isn't aimed at gamers, gaming or dedicated graphic users.

It even states in the description and i quote: "Pre-built and ready to accept your hardware the "Primo Motion" is perfect for the home and business user who wants to add their personal taste to their system."

The review even states a warning about using the PSU for dedicated graphics cards. That PSU is up to the job of what it STATES and use of onboard graphics.

I left a support ticket, hopefully they will get back to me soon.

In regards to the description, I see nothing there to suggest that it can't handle what I put in it. It has a pci express 16x slot and a slot for AMD 3 socket processor so it's got to expect some people putting nice stuff in.

In regards to the review, I didn't read it and shouldn't be expected to make a judgement on a single persons opinion. I expect the description to contain what I need to know about what I'm buying, which I think is fair!

Anyway i'll have to wait and see what OC says. I'm worried about my sound card though :(

Well I wanted a quiet one (because my hi fi is plugged into it) and one that will last for a long time. No idea if it is quiet but the brand name seems to suggest it is!

The phone guy recommended I get a min of 650w as well.

Just want a quality one I'll just plug in and forget about forever. Like, it's sorted now. I've been plauged with computer problems for so long now, just want to get one that works

But the 500W PSU in the build was a crap no-name brand that probably had less than 240 watts (20 amps) of power on the 12v rail (the critical rail in a modern PC) - the other 260 watts would be on the 3v and 5v rails.

Consider the BeQuiet Pure Power L7 530W Power Supply @ £42.98 inc VAT. It has 44 amps on the 12v rails which is great for your build. It's also got some good reviews and a very high efficiency. High efficiency = low excess heat = low temps = low noise.

Argh you lost me there. I never understood power numbers. I just assumed it was labelled 'Overclockers Value PSU 500w' that 500w was enough to power my system.

I don't mind overkilling psu as someone else mentioned as it lets me upgrade later and not have to worry about it for many years to come. Also im so fed up atm that I just want to buy one and be done with it!

Lol yeah got there in the end :) Fingers crossed it plugs in fine and my new PC is ok :) Also double fingers crossed I don't need to reinstall win7 because I cba.

Other psu was like a vacuum cleaner, I was actually embarrassed by the amount of noise it made when I was playing l4d2 lol, it just keep getting louder and louder and then BANG!

Just looked up this psu's noise rating, its 15db which is a whisper! I'm not kidding the other one was probably like 70db

Edit (new sig :D)

It took me ages to put it all in, but, it works :)

1 Major problem left :(
My emu 1820m card isn't producing any sound... but it is sending power to the breakout box so it's plugged in... I'll try and reinstall the drivers, if this is broken, I will be massively upset as it cost me £350 and is one of my pride and joys!

Anyway,

I had to take the whole thing apart, an back, and apart before everything was ok (loose connection first time I think in something, idk).

Lessons:

1) Don't buy a ****ing awful PSU. That thing is a POS and there was nothing on the description to indicate to me it couldn't handle anything I put in it. I'm a noob and thought 500w = 500w and only silly people spent >£30 on a psu.
2) Don't buy a ****ing huge PSU if you bought a value case (small)
3) Don't buy value anything. I should have bought a case and mobo seperate.

The PSU just fits inside, the cables are a royal mess but I tied them away from the fans/ventilation etc so they should be fine. There jsut isn't enough space in there, an the PSU cables are really long and multiparted (obv expecting a bigger case). But it went in eventually. I wouldn't recommend anyone else get that combo though.

On to trying to fix the sound card... please, please work

YESSSS SOUND WORKS

Jesus what a scare.

Disabled/uninstalled on board via device manager
Uninstalled emu drivers/apps
Reinstalled emu drivers
Reboot

All fine, PHEW.

Thanks for all your help everyone! NEVER BUY A CHEAP PSU.

They are only suitable for mahjong
