Help, no signal to monitor

Hey,

Before my old rig died it would still turn on, yet the monitor would remain on a blank screen with no signal, but it still knew it was plugged into a DVI-D port. I've now built myself a new rig and it's doing exactly the same thing. Have no idea if my new rig is working ok cos i can't get anything up on screen. It just started doing it one day on my old rig, without me changing anything in the BIOS etc.

Anyone know anything about this kind of problem?
Thanks

Edit: Just plugged a laptop through VGA into my monitor and it works fine, yet even if i plug the monitor into either of my rigs with the VGA, through a DVI adaptor, it still does not work :S

Well my old rig was about 4 years old:

AMD Athlon 3500+, Geforce 6800 256mb, 1gb ddr ram, Asus A8V Deluxe

Used to work fine on that setup until a week or so ago. Now i've finished my new rig and it still doesn't work, yet it works on the laptop.

New rig:

i7 920 w/Noctua NH-U12P, 6gb Corsair Dominator ddr3, evga gtx 295, evga x58 sli, 900W Tagan Piperock, Antec 1200, WD 150gb Raptor.

The only shared part between the two pc's is the hard drive, but even if that was broken (again :p) the gpu would still be able to output the bios wouldn't it.

The only time I have had this problem was on my sister's PC.

Turned out to be a dead motherboard.

The PC appeared to boot up correctly but no signal on monitor.

Don't know if this applies to you though as her's was using onboard graphics.

Can you test the graphics card on another PC?
Do you have a motherboard speaker? any unusual beeps?

All the motherboard lights are working fine, onboard speaker isnt making any noise and everything seems to be working. It works for the onboard laptop graphics but not for the 6800 or the 295.

I did read somewhere that if the motherboard has onboard graphics then you need to disable it in the bios so it uses the gpu, but i can't get onto the bios cos i cant see anything. Also would have thought that recent motherboards wouldn't have that problem anyway

I can't see why not.

I think you would still get a signal to the monitor (problems would occur when trying to boot the OS.)

e.g. If you boot from a Live CD instead of the HD it doesn't load until after the POST.

edit. You double checked you've got all the power cables etc. connected. (Both motherboard ones, power to GPU)

Not trying to be funny or anything but are you sure you've got the right power leads plugged into the gfx card?

Has your mobo got a bios reset switch?

What about the monitor cables, are you sure they're working?

Try re-seating the graphics card.

If none of that makes a difference then I'd be looking at that hard drive as that is the only common component between the two systems, with both having the same problem.

just got a 6-pin and 8-pin in my 295, so that should be fine, and it seemed to plug in fine as well. I did think it might be the dvi cable but it works on the laptop with a vga cable, but doesnt work in the pc's using vga with a dvi-> vga adaptor

I would try starting over, boot without the hard drive plugged in, try each memory stick individually. reseat cpu,gpu check all cables.

Long process but without trying each component individually I can't work out the problem.

And try another DVI cable too.

This is the 1st time ive built a pc on my own, but everything seemed to go ok. If some of the hardware was damaged wouldnt the board beep at me? Had a bit of trouble putting on the cpu, but it fit in snuggly the only way it goes in. It wouldnt turn on if the cpu was damaged would it?

Got the 24pin main power in, the 8 pin cpu power, the 2 gpu power cables, 2 sata and all the fans. Just have a 4 pin cable left from the psu, but there's nothing else that requires it

I'm not familiar with that mobo but isn't it a tri-sli board.

have you tried the other PCI-E slot's? Not sure if they boot in sequence or if you can use any.

yeah that's the one. I put it in the top slot which is labelled as the primary one. Don't think it's actually my gpu though cos it doesnt work on the 6800 in my old pc anymore either, but it used to without problems. I'll take my monitor round to my brother's tomorrow and see if it works on his card, and i'll try using his hdd too. Either way i don't know how im gonna fix this one :p

if i take off the cpu and the noctua do i need to re-apply the thermal paste every time? cos i don't have anything to remove it with

It could just be coincidence that your old pc had the same issue.

You have tested the monitor and it works so I don't think it is that. (you never know though).
If everything is in correctly one of your new parts may be DOA.
Does your brother have a pci-e slot in his pc. If so take your 295 and try that in his (if his psu is up to the job).
At least then you could rule out any faults with that.
I will assume he doesn't have an i7 system (maybe wrong) so that rules out testing of the cpu and ram.
If you boot with just cpu ram and gpu, and get the same issue you can rule out a fault with your hard drive aswell.

i could try. He has a core 2 quad and 2 9600's in sli, so my card should fit. Yeah nothing happens with the hard drive unplugged either. The only common ground i can find with the connections is that it doesnt like a digital connection for some reason. It works Vga-vga, but doesnt work dvi-dvi or dvi-vga. The monitor is a 4 year old tft DVI-D, i don't know if dvi has changed at all over the years but then it doesnt work in the old machine dvi either.

im planning on getting a new monitor next month anyway, as i'd like a larger screen, but i was still planning to use the old one as a second monitor. Also i couldn't be sure that a new one would work either. Ill try an old crt tomorrow

tyvm for all your help :D

if im taking it all apart again am i supposed to reapply the thermal compound every time i detach the heat sink from the processor?

I would recommend to do so as some of the paste will have displaced around the cpu.

when the cpu is off check that none of the pins have got bent.

Have the same problem on my iiyama 17". Turn the computer on and nothing happens, but when i unplug the power supply for the monitor and then plug it back in, it works fine.
It happens no matter what computer is plugged in.
