Guys,

Need your help please, you know those quick 5 min jobs.....

My Mum's pc is an ancient 1GHz Athlon on an Abit IS7 motherboard. In response to a complaint about poor performance, I checked this morning and was astounded to find it only had one 256MB module of PC133 SDRAM. Ahh no problem says I, I've a spare one of those knocking around somewhere I'll just pop it in and Bob's your Uncle...

I took that RAM out of the slot, checked it and popped it back into the same slot with another one next to it. Try and boot up and 'no video signal' to the monitor.

I've checked the monitor on my PC (using DVI connection) and it works, however trying it on my Mum's its 'no signal' using either DVI or VGA.

I've replaced the original RAM in the slot it was in and no joy. I've tried the same RAM in every other slot - no joy and I've tried the other RAM in turn in each of the other slots and still no signal! I've tried a spare video card and the same 'no signal'. Am I correct in thinking that even if I have borked the RAM somehow, this wouldn't stop the BIOS loading and displaying?

My only other ideas are that somehow the AGP slot the video card plugs into (which is next to the RAM slot) has failed or maybe the M/B itself.

Any ideas please, I was hoping to escape this weekend but I'm feeling very guilty at the prospect of running away having killed her PC...!!!

Cheers,

Paul.

Sorry forgot to say, yes fans spin up, HDD comes to life - everything would seem to suggest that all the usual things are loading, just no blasted display!!

There's no POST beeps but then I dont recall ever hearing any so I think the internal speaker may be shagged or disconnected.

i havent read the all your post due to lazyiness but I guess you have no video signal...

do u have a seperate gfx card or is it on board?

if its onboard or seperate it sounds like the gfx card has died...if its onboard then you will have to replace the mobo...if its seperate then a) try plugging the monitor into the onboard gpu and if u dont have one then try borrow 1 from a friend...if its not seperate i *** say the mobo is dead..

please note even on dead mobos, the fans spin, the hdd will spin etc but you will experience exactly the same prob as you are getting now...however in your case its vital you check the gpu before replacing anything...

hope that helps..

Thats just deeply annoying - you try to help and eveything goes pear shaped!

It is possible that opening and changing has shifted something - try reseating everything. Make sure there is no jumper for case open. That the power supply has not tripped. That the power lead is secure. The fans spin up but there is No Signal?

The movement of changing the ram may of shorted the board against the case - try it out of the case.
