Guys I'm seriously not happy with my 7870 X-Edition. I am struggling to play Crysis 3, Tomb raider and now Bio shock on medium settings (1080)
I have to play the games on low or my system crashes. Ive attempted everything as you do and just think the card is not up to much.

I'm looking to get an nVidia card how much better is a 660Ti or will I need to go higher to get improvements.

I'd like to play the above games on a decent setting ( not max) but better than medium which my 7870 keeps crashing on.

What are the specs of the rest of your system?
Is it overclocked?
What are your temps like for the GPU and CPU under load?
What drivers are you running?

PSU sounds fine, doubt that's the issue.

Hi, what GPU did you have in before the 7870? are you using Beta Drivers this can cause your 7870 to crash when over clocked.

MY Toxic 6950@6970 overclocked some beta drivers cause it to crash, WHQL Drivers never have any problems at all.

Sabertooth Asus z77
VTX 7870 x edition

Running 13.2 drivers

what do you mean crashes? an in powers off? my guess is the psu isnt man enough for it your really looking at 300 ish watts before adding any extras like drives fans and other stuff assuming that psu is a few years old i bet its on its limit without any overclocking

What do you mean by crashing? Game crashes, computer turns off, blue screen of death? Do you get an errors.

The system hangs, freezes on a screen, sometimes it will drop back to desktop and other times reboots the system.

Lets take crysis 3 if I run on high the system will freeze and then reboot the machine. Play it on medium and the game will play for a good while ( 15 mins ) then freeze the screen and then drop back to desktop.

Might just simply be a faulty card? I've got the 7850 overclocked it last night and am playing bioshock on very high with stable 60fps. that with a much craper cpu than yours too, So yours should be no probs at all

Sounds like either a possible GPU issues or PSU issue. The PSU you have is easily enough for it so it might just be a faulty unit.

Have you tried running a graphics demanding benchmark to imitate the load on the GPU?

Also did you uninstall any previous drivers before getting this card.

strange you should post this as my friend was having the same problems last week

He tried everything, windows rebuild, new drivers, old drivers

His system isn't too shabby either, good case, cooling, quality psu etc etc. Unfortunately he never got to the bottom of it and after a few nights swearing he exchange it for a GTX660 (not the ti though).

No problems with that and he's happy

I can't say I've EVER had any issues running mine though so who knows

There's something up with the card or the driver install. I have a 7770 and it plays tomb raider and bioshock just fine at 1080p with higher settings.

The crashing is not normal operation/response regardless of game setting or gpu load whther you're looking at cards from either chip maker.
Still a few other Q's open that that could help us narrow down the prob.

What gpu (maybe more than one) temperatures are you getting under load? (gpuz or msi afterburner will show you these, run a game to push the load or a benchmark like unigine heaven and monitor the temps)

Have you removed the overclock you mentioned you tried and returned to stock settings?

Did you have a previous card installed before the 7870 (and if so which one) and did you uninstall drivers? Are you on beta drivers or whql?
