Grandson arrived for a few days with Train Simulator 2017 and wants to run it on my PC.

I have a i7 920 2.67 Ghz CPU and an Ati Radeon HD4800 Graphics card.

He doesn't have a steam account, nor do I!

Can set up a stram account for him. BUT

- will it run?
- can he transfer to a different PC if he gets one?

Grandad (PC wise but PC Games unwise!!!)

Yes it should run, no issue.

Set up a Steam account but in his name. The game will 'bind' itself to that account so all he has to do is log into that Steam account on any computer (and re-download the game through it) to play it in future.

Which 4800 do you have? The two main ones in that range were the 4850 and 4870. There were two versions of the 4850, with 256 MB VRAM and 512 MB VRAM, and TS 2017 demands a minimum of 512 MB. The 4870 has 1 GB VRAM. There were also other models.

Give it a whirl but be prepared to pop down to a local store tomorrow morning and get yourself a GTX 1050 Ti graphics card.

train sim runs bad on most pcs sadly, might run better with a nvidia card
Train Sim runs perfectly ok on a half decent machine ie 3ghz Core2Duo or newer cpu, 4gbs ram and a 2gb Nvidia card such as GTX660 or better.
You're right about ATI cards & TS not being a good combination though.
It's a 32bit program so has the ram limitations that entails. Having a machine with 16gbs of ram wont make any difference to the performance of the game.
Really the faster the cpu the better the experience. TS2017 only comes with one UK route afaik, Riviera in the 50's which is set in the steam engine era. Good luck learning to drive one of those ;)

my dad hasn't played it for over a year or so, but getting it to run smooth without jaggies was really hard, think it needed a frame cap :(

that was with sandybridge at 4.5 and a 6970, or his newer 380 I think. its looks vs fps was appalling back then.

something like dirt or flatout would run several times better with more pretty stuff easily :/

Thanks all - installed via steam and runs fine. :D

Next step will be when he tries to run it on a PC at home - but I think his mum's laptop is too puny so I suspect it will only be run here when he visits.
