hi guys im new to all of this and i know your probably sick of the same old question but here goes

my current system is a q6600 cpu
xfx 680i lt motherboard
500 gig hard drive
4gb of ocz gold ddr2 ram
8800gt graphics card
vist 32bit

i would like to overclock my cpu to around 2.8 if i could
also on vista everything is 5.9 in the system settings but my memoryis holding me back at only 5.2
it is saying only 2.5gb on cpz-ubut showing 4gb
timming are 5-5-5-15
can i change them to make it any better?

aslo just brought the 8800gt card xxx alpha edition
would it be worth overclocking that too

my cooling is all stock so not wanting major overclocking but as i havent got a clue what im doing i thought a bit wont hurt it

if you guys need me to postany screenshots of anything or i have missed something out then let me know

im sorry if you have heard this question a 1000 times but i thought id give it a try

cheers guys
thx

Hi!

Not really sure what you mean about the memory. Post a screenshot of the memory tab in CPU-z!

As for overclocking, i would leave the timings as they are.

In the bios, you need to change the FSB to around 310. Stock is something like 266.

310 x the 9 multiplyer will give you around 2.8~

You'll need to change the ram frequency so that it's as close as stock speeds (800) as possible.

Cant really go into more detail as i dont know what the bios looks like :p

here is the image of cpz-u memory tab

also how do i change the ram frequency
sorry for being thick but would like to do it right
thanks

With the 680i board you should be able to 'unlink' the memory and set it to 1066mhz.

Go into Advanced Chipset Features> FSB & Memory Config.

Come down to 'FSB - Memory Clock Mode' and change it to Unlinked.

Then change 'FSB (QDR), MHZ' to 1250.

Then change ' MEM (DDR), MHZ' to 800.

Then go back a menu and go into System Voltages, and change Memory to 2.1v.

That should have you running at 2.8ghz with the memory running at around 800mhz.

You can leave the timings alone as they are already set up ok. But check them in CPU-Z once you boot back into Windows to ensure that they are set to 5-5-5-15.

ive just changed the things you have said and changed the fsb to 310 like benjo said also i tried to change the muiltipler but couldnt find it where you change it to 312x 9
it just asked to change from 6 or 9 so i put 9 in
i have done all the rest you have said
and loaded cpz-u back up
now i have
Capture-1.jpg

sometimes it changes to 2.812 but only for a second

also this is the memory tab

I think your CPU is being downclocked depending on the load it has. It's a bios setting i think, but cant remember what it's called :(

I wouldn't bother disabling it. It does no harm and will save a little energy when you aren't running something intensive.

Everything looks spot-on :)

ok cob ill leave it the way it is thanks mate your a star
my first overclock lol

do you fancy telling me how to up my graphics card a little
8800gt only 2 days old lol
cheers again guys

Download an application called "Ntune".

Also download ATi Tool.

You can alter the Core and Mem clocks of the GT in Ntune, and you can use ATi Tool to test it for artifacts :)

I think Rivatuner is considered to be the best tool for overclocking graphics cards. But I don't pay any attention to graphics cards and I'm really not the person to be asking for help on the topic.

If you search the Graphics card forum I'm sure the question has been asked and answered before :)

Or see above ^
